Last year, the Germantown Academy girls’ lacrosse team took a season-opening road trip to Southern California, where after playing in a tournament it lost two of its first three regulation games.
This year, the Patriots have traveled to Arizona, where again the competition has been very challenging.
On Monday night, Germantown Academy lost its second straight in the Valley of the Sun, falling in a 19-17 shootout to Pinnacle, the state’s No. 2 team, according to WestSidelax.com. On Saturday night. Germantown Academy opened the season with a 17-15 loss to Chaparral, the state’s top-ranked team and the No. 10 team in the West.
High Point-bound senior middie Jenn McDonald registered nine points on six goals and three assists, senior attack Emily Neumann had nine points on five goals and four assists and senior middie Lauren Littleton finished with eight points on five goals and three assists to lead Pinnacle (5-1) to its fifth straight win.
Junior middie Brittany Peccia added three points on a goal and two assists, and junior middie Kyndal Sorenson and senior middie Jaime Zito each scored once to round out the Pinnacle offense.
In defeat, middie Brooke Kiley scored a game-high seven goals for Germantown Academy, which fell to 0-2. Germantown Academy will complete its four-game road trip with games against Gilbert and Horizon on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
On Monday, Pinnacle led 10-7 at halftime before Germantown Academy started the second half with a three-goal run to draw level.
The game was tied, 17-17, late in the second half when Littleton scored the go-ahead goal with 2:09 to play. Neumann added insurance with 24 seconds left to give defending Arizona state champion Pinnacle one of the biggest wins in its short history.
“It’s quite significant for the program,” Pinnacle head coach Jim Lindsey said. “It’s probably our biggest win from an out-of-state perspective. We’ve gone to some tournaments, but we recognize how good Germantown is.”
