Joe Venit collected three goals and an assist and Josh Cavanaugh had two goals and two assists to pace host Springfield-Delco to an 11-3 victory over Strath Haven Thursday in a Central League boys’ lacrosse game.

The win sets up a Central League showdown for the Cougars, who will meet fellow undefeated rival Conestoga Tuesday at Springfield.

The Cougars, ranked No. 3 in the PIAA in the PA Media Rankings, are 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Central League. No. 1 Conestoga is also 4-0 after Thursday’s 10-0 shutout of Lower Merion.

“It was a good win for us as our squad played unselfishly,” said Springfield-Delco coach Mike Friel. “Josh Cavanaugh got us going early and we were getting everyone into the play.

“We have 12 seniors on our squad this year and the Central League is brutal. We will take one game at a time and next we have Conestoga and they are a very tough team – but we have some business that we have to take care of.

“We’re 7-1 now and we’re pretty hungry.”

Also for Springfield-Delco, Colin Keegan and Bobby Gildea each had two goals and an assist while Joe Devinney and Larry McLaughlin both scored once. Austin Kaut made 11 saves in goal in a strong effort while Dan Mojica was strong at long stick middie and Billy McCullough was solid at the face-off X.

Pat Fisher scored all three goals for Strath Haven, which got strong defense from Erik Lenke (committed to Air Force).

“Erik Lenke is a hard player to get around, he has a reach and is one of the better defenders that we have seen,” said Friel.
