Saturday’s men’s college roundup: Villanova tops St. John’s, Drexel falls

It took a fourth quarter comeback and five unanswered goals to guide No. 13 Villanova (8-3, 2-1) to a 12-10 Big East victory over visiting St. John’s (5-6, 2-2) Saturday night.

Seniors Paul Webber, Mark Scioscia and sophomore Kevin Cunningham led the Wildcats by providing a combined 16 points through nine goals and seven assists to give the Wildcats their tenth consecutive win at home and second consecutive in Big East play.

Webber had four goals and one assist while Scioscia had three goals and three assists and Cuningham added two goals and three assists.

Tyler Novotny (Spring-Ford) led St. John’s with three goals and one assist while Tom manes (Archbishop Ryan) had a goal and three assists and Charlie Holenstein (Downingtown West) scored once. Jarrett Carr (Hatboro-Horsham) added one assist.

Penn 12, Harvard 7

Al Kohart had four goals and John Coneelly added three as the Quakers
(5-7, 1-4) downed the 20th-ranked Crimson (5-5, 1-3).

Peter Schwartz (La Salle) had a goal and an assist for Harvard.

St. Joseph’s 10, Detroit 7

Sean Evans (Henderson) had three goals and an assist and Kyle Williams added two goals and two assists to lead the Hawks (2-10, 2-3) to their second straight win, a MAAC decision over Detroit (2-10, 1-4).

Delaware 9, UMass 6

Curtis Dickson scored three goals and Kevin Kaminski (Strath Haven) added one goal and one assist to lead the Hens (6-6, 1-2) to the CAA win over the No. 12 Minutement.

Towson 8, Drexel 7

Despite 14 saves from goalie Mark Manos (Salesianum, West Chester), the No. 7 Dragons fell to 9-3 and 2-1 in the CAA. Towson is 3-0 in league play.

Duke 13, Virginia 9

Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) made seven saves in goal as the Blue Devils (11-3, 1-2) stunned the host Cavaliers (11-1, 2-1) before 8.000. Duke has defeated the Cavs 12 straight times, and Virginia had won 15 straight overall at home.

John Haldy (Haverford School) scored once for the Cavs.

Penn State 11, Hofstra 10, OT

Matt Mackrides (Malvern Prep) tallied four goals as the Nittany Lions (2-9, 1-2) stunned the Pride (7-4, 1-3) in a CAA game.

Bryant 9, Sacred Heart 4

JK Poirier (Malvern Prep) scored twice and had an assist and defenseman Mason Poli (Downingtown East) had one assist to lead Bryant (8-4).

Jacksonville 17, Presbyterian 7

James Trentini (Upper Dublin) had a goal and two assists for the winning Dolphins.

Canisius 8, Wagner 7

Cody Isdaner (Episcopal Academy) had four goals and an assist for Wagner.

Division III

Cabrini 22, Neumann 9

Casey Grugan (Ridley) had five goals and four assists to pace the Cavaliers (10-3, 5-0) to the CSAC win.

Justin Mailoux and Matt Toth (Coatesville) each had three goals and an assist for Neumann (2-9, 1-3).

Haverford College 9, McDaniel 6

Zack Cohen Myles Monaghan and Phillip Valliant each scored twice for the Fords (8-5, 4-3) in their Centennial Conference win.
