A record number of 24 boys’ lacrosse teams will compete Saturday in the 7th annual Brian Houshower Lacrosse Festival at Downingtown Middle School.
The event kicks off with round-robin games at 8:30 a.m. featuring teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware. The slate features 18 teams in the “A” Divisions and six in the ‘B” division. The championships games will be held at 3:20 p.m.
The event honors the spirit of the young student-athlete who was starting his sophomore year at Downingtown West in 2003 when he died in a car accident after school in East Brandywine Township.
The tournament, sponsored by the the Downingtown West Booster Club, benefits the Brian Houshower Scholarship Fund.
Houshower was to play for the first Downingtown West team. The school district had split in East and West from Downingtown High that fall.
Officials of the tournament gave a combined statement on honoring the memory of Houshower:
“The success of Downingtown Lacrosse has grown out of opportunity; last year’s preseason roster counted over 80 prospects for the West Varsity and JV rosters, more than double what had been the number back in that first Spring.
“Brian’s spirit is personified in every prospect who steps on the field. Every one of them full of optimism and motivation, in possession of a pure love for the game and a competitive spirit.
“As over the last decade lacrosse has become the fastest growing sport in the country, it was inevitable that the Brian Houshower Tournament would grow into the success it is today. Whether they come from Springfield or Nazareth, Garnet Valley, or Maryland, the kids who take the West fields this weekend will all share in a unique experience.
“They will earn a chance to join the lucky few over the years who have played the game Brian’s way, tucked in against the Rt. 30 Bypass among the grass and dirt of the Downingtown Boro on a frosty Fall morning.”
