Five Philly girls’ teams seek to advance to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) semifinals today.
At Avon Grove High, District 12 champion Archbishop Carroll meets District 1 runner-up Springfield-Delco at 2 p.m. At West Chester East, District 1 champion Radnor faces District 1 fifth-place finisher Downingtown East at 2 p.m.
Meanwhile, District 1 third-place finisher Unionville meets District 3 third-place finisher Penn Manor at Gov. Mifflin in Shillington at 4 p.m.
Radnor (23-1) is the defending PIAA champion and advanced to the second round with a 10-4 victory over North Penn. Downingtown East (19-5), the third-place finisher from the Ches-Mont League, whipped Nazareth High, 20-5, to advance.
Unionville (21-3), the runner-up from the Ches-Mont League, advanced by blitzing Hershey, 21-4. Penn Manor, the runner-up from the Lancaster-Lebanon League, dominated Seneca Valley, 26-9, in the first round.
Springfield-Delco (21-2) the Central League tri-champion, handed Catholic League champ Archbishop Carroll (15-5) a 12-11 defeat on May 13. The Cougars advanced with a 16-14 conquest of Strath Haven.
Carroll advanced by outscoring Great Valley, 20-12.
The Carroll-Springfield winner will meet the survivor of District 3 squads Manheim Township (22-0) and Hempfield (19-6). Those teams meet at Gov. Mifflin at 2 p.m.
