Phillylacrosse.com Boys’ Team Coach of the Year: Runner-ups, Honorable Mention selections

Phillylacrosse.com salutes the efforts of the boys’ coaches of the Philadelphia region. Aside from Coach of the Year Brady McCormick (Upper Merion), these coaches are also honored for their accomplishments in 2010:

Top runner-ups:

Mark Duncan, Shipley School – Led Gators to second straight Friends Schools League championship and a record of 16-2. He and his coaches helped lead team’s community service drive to raise more than $3,000 for victims of earthquake in Haiti.

Bruce Garcia, Central Bucks East – Led Patriots to fourth straight Suburban One Continental Conference championship and berth in PIAA championships. He also several years ago developed the Extra Man Opportunity Community Service Club, which provides opportunities for all members of the team to participate regularly in community service projects.

Michael Friel, Springfield-Delco – Guided the Cougars to their first Central League championship since 2005, including regular-season wins over state champion Conestoga and state runner-up La Salle. Named Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association and Central League Coach of the Year.

Honorable Mention

Ned Ide, Hill School – Led Blues to surprise win over Lawrenceville School and a share of the Mid-Atlantic Prep championship.

Tommy Hannum, Downingtown West – Led Whippets to share of first Ches-Mont League crown and first victory over co-champ Downingtown East.

Bill Leahy, La Salle – Led La Salle to the state finals despite massive graduation. Had won previous two state championships.

Jeff Neese, Owen J. Roberts – Led Wildcats to third straight Pioneer Athletic Conference championship anf fourth consecutive trip to PAC-10 finals since a 3-16 season in 2006.

Todd Pettit, Souderton – In his second year, the Indians improved from 3-15 to 10-7 (including four one-goal wins).

Frank Urso, Garnet Valley – Led Jaguars to third-place finishes in the Central League and District 1 tournaments in his second season.
