Philly players dominate CAA Silver Anniversary men’s team

The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) has announced its men’s lacrosse Silver Anniversary team, which includes nine former CAA Players of the Year and 17 All-America selections. As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009-10, the CAA is recognizing Silver Anniversary teams in 21 championship sports. The teams were selected by a panel of current and former coaches in the conference.

Members of the CAA Silver Anniversary team for men’s lacrosse are Matt Alrich (Delaware), Bruce Bickford (Drexel), Jay Card (Hofstra), Joe Canuso (Villanova), Andrew Chapman (Drexel), Casey Cittadino (Towson), Danny Cocchi (Towson), Chris Collins (Delaware/Drexel assistant coach), Adam Crystal (Drexel), Dan Deckelbaum (Delaware), Ben DeFelice (Towson), Curtis Dickson (Delaware), Jonathan Engelke (Towson), Jordan Hall (Delaware), Cam Howard (Delaware), Athan Iannucci (Hofstra/member of Philadelphia Wings), Tom Kessler (Hofstra), Brian Marks (Villanova/Downingtown High), Brett Moyer (Hofstra/Ridley High/Philadelphia Wings), Nicky Polanco (Hofstra), Alex Smith (Delaware), Reed Sothoron (Towson), Chris Unterstein (Hofstra), Kevin Unterstein (Hofstra) and Jon Urbana (Villanova).

Men’s lacrosse has been a championship sport in the CAA since 2002. Former member Loyola won the first CAA championship in 2002 before Towson reeled off three consecutive titles from 2003-2005. Hofstra claimed the CAA crown in 2006 and 2008, while Delaware took home the league title in 2007 and Villanova won the championship in 2009.

The conference has had multiple teams selected to participate in the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship in four of the past eight years. Delaware advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Championship in 2007 after knocking off 2nd-seeded Virginia and UMBC. Towson reached the quarterfinals in 2003 and Hofstra made the quarterfinals in 2006 after tying an NCAA record with 17 victories.

CAA Men’s Lacrosse 25th Anniversary Team

Matt Alrich – Delaware – 2000-04 – Timonium, Md.

• Earned 1st team All-CAA honors in 2004 and 2nd team accolades in 2003

• Led the CAA with 34 goals and 46 points in 2004 and made the CAA All-Tournament team

• Tallied a team-best 35 goals in 2003, which is the eighth-best total in league history

Bruce Bickford – Drexel – 2005-08 – Providence, R.I.

• Honored as the CAA Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American in 2008

• Selected to the All-CAA first team at goalkeeper in 2007 and 2008

• Ranked 4th in the nation in save percentage (.629) and 5th in GAA (6.99) in 2008

Jay Card – Hofstra – 2007-present – Caledon, Ontario

• Received CAA Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American honors in 2009

• Selected as the CAA Rookie of the Year and named 2nd team All-CAA in 2008

• Led the CAA with 35 goals in 2009 and ranked 10th with 27 in 2008

Joe Canuso – Villanova – 2003-06 – Moorestown, N.J.

• Named CAA Co-Player of the Year in 2004 and Co-Rookie of the Year in 2003

• Villanova’s all-time leader in saves with 672

• Owns the CAA season record for goals against average with 6.07 in 2003

Andrew Chapman – Drexel – 2007-08 – Toronto, Ontario

• Selected to the All-CAA first team in 2007 and 2008

• Became first Drexel player in 14 years to score at least 40 goals (42) in 2007

• Led the CAA in goals and points (53) in 2007 and ranked second in goals (39) in 2008

Casey Cittadino – Towson – 2002-06 – Baldwin, N.Y.

• Three-time All-CAA selection, including first-team honors in 2004 and 2005

• Selected as the Most Valuable Player of the 2004 CAA Championship

• Ranks second in Towson history with 65 caused turnovers

Danny Cocchi – Towson – 2000-03 – Hicksville, N.Y.

• Earned second-team All-America honors in 2001 and honorable mention in 2002 and 2003

• Two-time All-CAA selection who was the CAA Defensive Player of the Year in 2003

• Ranks second in Towson history with 283 ground balls

Chris Collins – Delaware – 2001-05 – Yorktown Heights, N.Y.

• Received honorable mention All-America honors at goalkeeper in 2005

• Selected to the All-CAA second team in 2004 and 2005

• Owns Delaware season record for GAA (7.56) and ranks second in career GAA (8.63)

Adam Crystal – Drexel – 2004-07 – Baldwin, N.Y.

• CAA Defensive Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American in 2007

• Three-time All-CAA selection, including first-team honors in 2006 and 2007

• Recognized as a USILA Scholar All-American in 2007

Dan Deckelbaum – Delaware – 2004-07 – Owings Mills, Md.

• Selected to the All-CAA first team in 2006 and 2007

• Scored 27 goals for 2007 UD squad that advanced to the NCAA Final Four

• Honored on the Jewish Sports Review All-America team

Ben DeFelice – Towson – 2001-04 – Baltimore, Md.

• Honored as the CAA Co-Player of the Year in 2004

• Received USILA honorable mention All-America honors in 2003

• Ranks fifth in career groundballs (231) and sixth in faceoff wins (357) at Towson

Curtis Dickson – Delaware – 2006-present – Port Coquitlam, British Columbia

• Honorable mention All-American and Tewaaraton Trophy finalist in 2008

• Selected to the All-CAA first team in 2008 and 2009

• Enters his senior season ranked third on the CAA’s career goals list with 100

Jonathan Engelke – Towson – 2004-08 – Massapequa, N.Y.

• Selected to the All-CAA first team in 2004 and 2008

• CAA career leader in goals with 113 and ranks second in career points with 156

• Honored as the CAA Rookie of the Year in 2004

Jordan Hall – Delaware – 2004-07 – Surrey, British Columbia

• Three-time All-CAA selection who was honored as the 2005 CAA Player of the Year

• Earned USILA honorable mention All-America honors in 2005 and 2007

• Holds NCAA record for fastest goal to start a game (:03 vs. Albany, 2005)

Cam Howard – Delaware – 2004-08 – Wilmington, Del.

• CAA’s all-time leader in assists (102) and points (187)

• Three-time All-CAA selection, including first-team honors in 2005 and 2006

• One of 20 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award in 2008

Athan Iannucci – Hofstra – 2004-06 – Coquitlam, British Columbia

• Chosen to the USILA All-America second team in 2006

• Two-time All-CAA selection who was the MVP of the 2006 CAA Tournament

• Set CAA and Hofstra records for goals in a season with 62 in 2006

Tom Kessler – Hofstra – 1999-2002 – Hicksville, N.Y.

• Earned 2nd team USILA All-America honors in 2002 and 3rd team honors in 2001

• Three-time first-team all-conference selection

• Hofstra’s career goals leader with 140 and ranks third in career points (207)

Brian Marks – Villanova – 2000-03 – Glenmoore, Pa.

• CAA Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American in 2003

• Set the CAA single-season record for assists with 43 in 2003

• Holds the Villanova for career assists (114) and is third in career points (199)

Brett Moyer – Hofstra – 2003-06 – Ridley Park, Pa.

• Three-time USILA All-America selection, including first-team honors in 2006

• 2005 CAA Tournament MVP who helped lead Towson to three CAA titles

• Ranks second in career GAA (9.13) and third in career saves (578) at Towson

Chris Unterstein – Hofstra – 2003-06 – Shoreham, N.Y.

• Honored as the CAA Player of the Year and a USILA first-team All-American in 2006

• Three-time All-CAA selection, including first team honors in 2004 and 2006

• Set the CAA season record for points with 81 in 2006

Kevin Unterstein – Hofstra – 2005-08 – Shoreham, N.Y.

• Named CAA Defensive Player of the Year and CAA Tournament MVP in 2008

• Two-time All-CAA selection who was an honorable mention All-American in 2007

• Ranks fourth all-time in the CAA with 245 ground balls

Jon Urbana – Villanova – 2002-05 – Denver, Colo.

• Named CAA Defensive Player of the Year and an honorable mention All-American in 2004
