Twelve Philly girls are in a group of 187 trying out today, Tuesday and Wednesday for the 2011 U.S. women’s U-19 team at UMBC.

Twenty-four of them will be selected to a training team Wednesday. Eventually the squad will be whittled down to the 18-player roster that will represent Team USA next summer

The tryouts, run by US Lacrosse, include players from 25 different states who qualified regionally after strong performances at the US Lacrosse National Tournament in May.

Coaches and selectors from around the country will choose the squad. The U.S. has won three straight U19 world championships (1999, 2003 and 2007), defeating Australia, 18-3, in the 2007 gold medal match in Peterborough, Ontario.

The Philly hopefuls include:
Rising junior midfielder Kelly Cross, (Oreland/Upper Dublin)
Rising senior midfielder Kelly Devlin (Downingtown/Downingtown East)
Rising senior midfielder Stephanie Finley (Media/Sacred Heart)
Rising junior midfielder Brooke Kiley (Lower Gwynedd/Germantown Academy)
Rising senior midfielder Caitlin McCartney (Doylestown/Archbishop Wood)

Also, Penn Charter rising senior Blaine Steinberg (midfielder) was selected to play, but is unable to try out after undergoing surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her knee.

Others from just outside the region include:
Midfielder Meghan Cobb (Wilmington, Ursuline Academy, DE)
Goalie Shannon Nee (Lancaster/Manheim Township)
Midfielder Austin Noonan (Bear, Ursuline Academy, DE)
Midfielder Devon Schneider (Lititz/Manheim Township)
