Radnor senior defenseman Jeff Michaelson has made a commitment to play Division III lacrosse at the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point on Long Island.
Michaelson helped the Red Raiders finish 13-9 and reach the District 1 quarterfinals in 2010. He plays club lacrosse for Competitive Edge and Team Philly.
“They were the first school ever to contact me back in my sophomore year,” said Michaelson, who is on the Distinguished Honor Roll and has received National Merit honors. “They had high interest in me, and I learned more and more about the program.
“I saw I had the opportunity to serve my country, and at the same time, earn a good education while playing in a good lacrosse program.”
Michaelson noted that there are only two majors at the Merchant Marine – Deck and Engineering. He is choosing Deck, which means he will study operations and logistics as well as management.
“After I serve my mandatory time (5 years) in the maritime industry, I want to use that experience in business and commodities or trading logistics,” he said.
Michaelson also liked the campus and noted its right next to the home of renowned author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who wrote the “Great Gatsby.”
“The location is beautiful,” he said. It’s at the other end of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s house and a 10-minute train ride to Manhattan.”
Michaelson will join Philly’s Michael Ackerman (sophomore attackman from Conestoga) on the Mariners.
Michaelson also joins several other Radnor senior as Division III recruits. The others are midfielder Charlie Rubin (Tufts) and attackman Tyler Murkley (Lynchburg). Also, attackman Jeff Puckette has committed to Division I Penn.
“We have a really strong team with a lot of young guys and a good core of people with experience,” he said. “We have the players to go pretty far. We want to go for the Central League (title) and push into the state playoffs.”
