Recent Malvern Prep graduate Mike Irvine has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Ursinus College.
Irvine was a key contributor on a Friars team that shared the Inter-Ac League
championship with Haverford School this year. Irvine played last year in the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Showcase and made the Fab 40 team in the Philly Lacrosse Showcase.
He plans to study Business/Economics and possibly Exercise and Sports Science at Ursinus for head coach Jamie Steele, who has landed a large number of Philly players for 2010-11.
The others include Malvern teammates Scott Hueber (attackman) and Dylan Spangenberg (midfielder), Lower Merion’s Nile Thompson (midfielder) and Ari Weisband (defenseman), Bishop Shanahan’s Jordan McGinty and Jim Stanley (midfielders), Conestoga’s Dan Cohen (defenseman), Springfield-Delco’s Jordan Demcher (attackman), Pennsbury’s Shawn Caven (midfielder/face-off specialist) and Mechanicsburg’s Ercol Acri (Team HEADstrong club/midfielder).
“Coach Steele is building a real promising future,” said Irvine. “I like his drive and leadership and they have a closely-knit team.”
Irvine said the highlight in the 2010 season was defeating nationally-ranked and arch-rival Haverford School twice to earn a piece of the league crown.
“We had a good game plan and prepared well and had the skill to beat them,” he said.
