From Press Releases
After just one game of the 2010 season, three members of La Salle’s women’s lacrosse team are already making some noise in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
It was announced by the Atlantic 10 that La Salle took all three conference award nominations for last week.
Senior Stefany McKee was honored as A-10 Player of the Week, sophomore Sara Ciaverelli (North Penn) was named Defensive Player of the Week, and freshman Melanie Sarcinello (Marple Newtown) was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Week.
In the Explorers season-opener at Navy this past Friday, McKee was the team’s leading scorer with three goals on five shots. McKee, the first La Salle lacrosse player to receive the recognition since Emily Bonczek did back on March 10, 2008, helped the Explorers overcome a 6-3 deficit when she tied the game at seven apiece on her second goal of the evening.
Also at Navy, Ciaverelli picked up three ground balls and forced one Navy turnover during La Salle’s season-opener in Annapolis, Md. Ciaverelli is the first Explorer to ever be named Defensive Player of the Week by the A-10.
Sarcinello was recognized as the conference’s Rookie of the Week for her stellar performance in her first collegiate game. She became the first Explorer to be awarded the honor since current teammate Jill Davis (Ridley) did back in 2007. Sarcinello tallied four points on the night as she scored a goal and dished out three assists, while also recording two draw controls.
The Explorers have a week off until they open their home slate on Feb. 23 at 3 p.m. against Florida in McCarthy Stadium.
