The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) announced Friday that the state boys’ and girls’ championship games will again be held at HersheyPark Stadium for 2011 and 2012.
The announcement came after some discussion had be made for the title games to be moved to the Philadelphia area. In each of the first two years, Philly teams from District 1 and 12 dominated PIAA competition and the four finalists came from those districts.
Lehigh was considered as an alternative site for the two-year period, but it was decided that HersheyPark Sadium would host the next two title games and that the sites would be placed out for bid for 2013 and 2014.
La Salle and Conestoga have been the only boys’ teams to make it to HersheyPark Stadium. La Salle, of District 12 (Catholic League), defeated Conestoga, 7-3, in the first PIAA title game in 2009 and then Conestoga – of District 1 – avenged the loss with a 10-6 win over the Explorers last month.
Radnor, of District 1, has won both girls’ PIAA crowns, defeating Central League rivals Strath Haven, 20-10, in 2009 and Springfield-Delco, 14-7, in 2010.
