The snow is finally melting, the sun has been shining and that sound of balls buzzing through the air is, indeed, the sound we’ve been waiting to hear.
Today is the first official day of the second Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association lacrosse season. Last year the season culminated in all-Philly championship games as La Salle defeated Conestoga, 7-3, for the boys’ crown and Radnor toppled Strath Haven, 20-10, for the girls’ title.
The lacrosse season actually kicks off this Friday when Inter-Ac League power Haverford school hosts national power St. Paul’s (MD) and Inter-Ac member Penn Charter visits Loyola Blakefield (MD). Here are the dates to look for in the PIAA season.
*First Practice Date – March 8
*Minimum Length of Preseason Practice – 3 weeks
*First Inter-School Practice or Scrimmage Date – March 13
*Maximum Number of Regular Season Inter-School Practices or Scrimmages – 2
*First Regular Season Contest Date – March 26
*Maximum Length of Regular Season – 9 weeks
*Maximum Number of Regular Season Contests – 18
*Last Regular Season Contest Date and District Deadline – May 29
*First Round of PIAA play (16 teams in one classification) – June 1
*PIAA quarterfinals – June 5
*PIAA semifinals – June 8
*PIAA Lacrosse Championships – Boys’ and girls’ doubleheader on Saturday, June 12 at HersheyPark Stadium. Girls begin at 11 a.m., Boys at 1 p.m.
*Number of PIAA girls’ teams in the state: 165.
*Number of PIAA boys’ teams in the state: 167
*PIAA playoff berths (for both boys and girls): District 1: 7 teams; District 3: 4 teams; District 7: 3 teams; District 11: 1 team; District 12: 1 team.
