The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has named Essex Community College freshman Neil Willis (Malvern Prep) as the Ed Devine Award, recognizing the top defensive player in the NJCAA.
Willis, according to a NJCAA statement, was “a dominant ‘take-away’ defenseman who affected the opposing offenses throughout the year.” Willis is being recruited by a host of Division I schools across the country.
Willis, playing long stick midfielder, also earned first-team Juco All-American honors and was an All-Region 20 First-Team pick, a Maryland Juco First Team selection and both the All-Maryland JUCO and Region 20 Defensive Player of the Year.
Essex posted a 16-2 record, won the Region 20 championship and gained a berth in the finals of the NJCAA championships where it fell to Onondaga (N.Y.), 17-4.
