West Chester University opened its women’s lacrosse season with a 14-12 victory over host Pfeiffer University during its spring break trip to North Carolina on Saturday.
Jackie Hoover (Cheltenham) and Claire Grimwood each registered a hat trick in goal. Grimwood finished with an assist as well to post four points in the win. The Golden Rams trailed 8-6 at halftime, but used an excellent second half effort to pull out the season-opening win.
Nicole Haines (Great Valley) scored twice and Erin Oczkowski (Archbishop Wood) netted two goals as well for the Golden Rams.
Mackenzie O’Keefe (Downingtown East) made nine saves in goal for West Chester in her first college start in goal.
Mercy College 14, Holy Family 5
Jennifer James (Little Flower) led Holy Family with two goals and one assist in its opener. Stephanie McNesby (Archbishop Ryan) scored twice and Katherine Podlinski recorded a goal and an assist. Goalie Melissa Jenkins (Interboro) made 10 saves.
Freshman Lauren Mateja (Upper Merion) had seven saves for Mercy (2-0).
St. Anselm 14, Phila. University 13
Caribeth Shappell had five goals and two assists for Philadelphia in its opening-day loss. Kathleen Maurer added four goals and an assist and Taylor Peltzer (Archbishop Wood) had two goals.
