Bishop Shanahan senior midfielder Jackie Donato has signed a letter of intent to play next year at La Salle University.

Donato, an honorable mention All-Ches-Mont National Conference pick last year, was late in the recruiting process because she did not play club lacrosse until last summer. Finally, La Salle and rookie coach Candace Taglianetti entered the picture.

“It was my first time playing on a travel team (SEPA) last summer and I was hoping to get some looks,” said Donato. “The right school didn’t come along right away, but then La Salle contacted me.

“It was perfect timing for me. I really liked how coach Taglianetti presented the program. She has a really positive attitude as a new coach and it’s a great opportunity to contribute to a team that is building.”

La Salle, which won only one game last year, already has four wins under Taglianetti. Donato also liked the fact that the team is comprised mostly of Philly girls – 13 of the 22 on the current roster are from the region and six other recruits for next year are from Philadelphia: Marple Newtown’s Jackie Roebuck and Melanie Sarcinello, Archbishop Carroll’s Ryan Yankowich and Amanda Salata, North Penn’s Lauren McDermott and West Chester East’s Audrey Metzger-Bailey,

Donato plans to study business at La Salle.

“La Salle has a really good business program and a good co-op program, so I plan to take advantage of that,” Donato said. “And I’m glad it (the 2009 recruiting class) is a Philly group. I feel like I could really get along with them.”

Donato also is optimistic about her current team at Shanahan. The Eagles are 4-5, but have shown great improvement under first-year coach Kevin Goforth.

“I think our team has come a long way in the past couple years and this year is a turning point with Mr. Goforth coming in,” she said. “I think we have a lot of talented athletes and we have a lot of potential.”
