Nicole Miller has signed a National Letter of Intent to play Division II lacrosse, but today her focus is solely on soccer and helping raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Miller, a senior attack from Owen J. Roberts, signed with East Stroudsburg University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference last week during the early signing period. But her thoughts today are on overseeing the third annual “Kick for a Cure” Wildcat Soccer Bowl tonight at Owen J. Roberts at 7 p.m.
The Kick for a Cure” Wildcat Soccer Bowl is a game matching senior girls’ All-Stars from the Pioneer Athletic Conference and the Ches-Mont League. Donations will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Miller, an officer with DECA (Distributive Education Club of America),proposed the All-Star benefit after meeting a 6-year-old boy suffering from Leukemia while making a family trip to a dude ranch in Wyoming three summners ago.
Miller, using her ties with DECA, created the All-Star benefit with the help of OJR athletic director Dave Strock .Over the past two years, the ‘Kick for a Cure’ has raised over $12,800, and this year’s goal is to raise $10,000.
“I had met the boy when my family went to Wyoming and also some friends has mentioned to me that there was no All-Star Game for soccer,” said Miller. “It’s really great knowing that I am able to give back and support something so important.”
All proceeds from the event go exclusively to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Owen J. Roberts DECA will also collect non-perishable items for the North Coventry Food pantry at the event.
In lacrosse, Miller scored 37 goals and had a team-high 23 assists for the Wildcats (9-9) last year. She has 75 goals and 50 assists in her career and has started since freshman year.Miller earned All-PAC 10 honorable mention honors as well as the Wildcats’ Coaches Award. Miller plays club lacrosse for Blitz Lacrosse Club.
Miller played varsity soccer at OJR as a junior, but decided to focus on lacrosse this year.
At ESU, Miller will play for head coach Lynne Elphick, an Owen J. Roberts graduate. Elphick guided the Warriors to a 5-5 mark in the PSAC Eastern Division and a 7-10 overall record last spring after being named PSAC Coach of the Year in 2008.
Miller is the second Wildcats player to sign during the early period. Goalie Kristen Gregory signed with Division I Duquesne.
