Philadelphia Wings forward Athan Iannucci, the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Most Valuable Player in 2008, has been placed on the injured reserve list.
Iannucci was limited in 2009 after surgery to repair a knee injury he suffered while playing for Major Series Lacrosse’s St. Regis Indians in 2008. He reinjured the knee, and a second surgery was completed two weeks ago. Iannucci will be rehabilitating in his home city of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Iannucci played in 10 games for the Wings in 2009 and accumulated 37 points (23 G, 14 A). He also picked up 38 loose balls and was named the NLL “Overall Player of the Week” for week 12 of the season.
In 2008, Iannucci set an NLL single-season goal-scoring record, netting 71 goals in 16 regular season games. He also received the NLL’s Player of the Month Award three out of the four months of the season (January, February, April), a league first. Iannucci was originally drafted by the Wings in the first round (eighth overall) in the 2006 NLL Entry Draft after finishing his standout college career at Hofstra University.
The Wings open their 2010 home season on Saturday, Jan 16 vs. the Boston Blazers at the Wachovia Center.
