The Syracuse Orange is ranked No. 1 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse (USILA) preseason coaches poll that was released today. The Orange received eight of the 10 first-place votes and a total of 198 points.
Virginia received the other two first-place votes. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 2 with 192 points. Maryland (169 points), Cornell (162 points) and Johns Hopkins (155 points) rounded out the top five. Drexel and Penn both received votes, but are not in the Top 20.
Syracuse head coach John Desko enters his 11th season at the helm of the program. Desko is 118-40 and has won four national championships in his first 10 years. He was named the USILA Division I Coach of the Year for the first time after leading the Orange to a school-record tying 16 victories and the NCAA title in 2008.
The Orange begins the 2009 regular season at the Carrier Dome on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 3:00 p.m. against Providence.
