Jim Schorn, an assistant lacrosse coach the past eight years at his alma mater, West Chester East, has been promoted to the position of head boys’ coach.

Schorn served as the offensive coordinator under Jon Heisman, who left the job this summer to take the head position at nearby Bishop Shanahan after guiding the Vikings to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs.

Schorn also was head coach at Downingtown High (before the split) from 1997-2000.

“When we’re on the field we focus on battling from the beginning of the game to the end of the game,” Schorn said. “Also, I’m a positive energy guy; I like to be looked at a players’ coach.

“Lastly, I coach discipline. You have to be fully disciplined in the game and the decisions you make in the game.”

Schorn was a reserve on West Chester East’s one state championship team in 1988. He began his coaching career at the youth level and was a JV coach and assistant at Downingtown from 1994-96.  He also has coached club lacrosse with Black Bear and this year started the Man-Up lacrosse team, a non-profit Under-15 team that performs community service and fundraising projects for local male and female coaches that are in need due to illnesses, unforeseen events or other reasons.

Schorn said East – which went 16-6 last year and finished sixth in District 1 – graduated a lot of key players. But he is optimistic the Vikes can remain a contender in the Ches-Mont League.

“Are we in a rebuilding year? I am not saying we’re in a full rebuilding year, but we have some holes to fill,” he said. “I am looking for gritty, hard-nosed athletes to fill those spots.

“I also like to play a tough schedule and we’re looking to add some of the tougher teams in the area. I think it helps down the road with the league and the playoffs.”
