Scholastic wrap: Malvern rallies to defeat Episcopal boys, 7-5; EA girls handle Germantown Academy, 19-7

    Conor Steidle and Ryan Creighton each scored two goals and sophomore Drew Kennedy domnated at the face-off X as visiting Malvern Prep rallied for a 7-5 victory over stubborn Episcopal Academy Friday night in an Inter-Ac League boys’ lacrosse opener.

    Episcopal (5-2), ranked seventh in the PA Media Lacrosse Rankings, had a 3-2 halftime lead. But Malvern scored two quick goals on fast breaks set up by the dominant work of Kennedy at the X. Kennedy won 13 of 14 face-offs.

    Harte Thompson, JK Poirier and T.J. Hanzsche also scored for the fifth-ranked Friars, who improve to 2-3 as they gear for Tuesday’s home game against second-ranked Haverford School.

    EA was led again by senior Cody Isdaner, who had three goals and an assist. The Wagner-bound Isdander has 23 goals and 11 assists this year.

    Tyler Olsen added a goal and an assist for the Churchmen and John Gormley scored once. Matt Lerman was strong in goal with 14 saves.

Shipley 8, Roman Catholic 5

    Senior goalie Jack Tanenbaum had 21 saves as the Gators improved to 4-0. 

    Mike Litner had two goals and Julius Mouser, Arne Andersen, Justin Miller, Charlie Gaulin, EJ Whyte and Danny Brown each scored once for Shipley.

Central Bucks East 13, Hatboro-Horsham 8

    Matt Hughes scored four goals and Adam Bitzer added three to pace the Patriots to a key Suburban One Continental Conference win over the Hatters.

    Zach Sharman and Rich O’Brien each added two goals for East (4-2, 3-0) and Chase Kulda made 10 stops in goal. The Hatters (4-1, 3-1) got three goals each from John Rombach and Ryan Kreston.

Boyertown 11, Pennridge 8

Sun Valley 15, Bishop Shanahan 7
Upper Dublin 14, Plymouth-Whitemarsh 6

    Tim Duke pumped in five goals and had two assists while Eric Brenninger and Jimmy Trentini had three goals apiece as the Cardinals bounded the Colonials in a key Suburban One American Conference game. Colin Joka led PW with three goals and Joe Hughes added a pair.


Episcopal 19, Germantown Academy 7

    Megan Spagnola collected five goals and Avery Curley had three goals and four assists as EA (6-0, 2-0) breezed to the Inter-Ac League victory over the Pats.

    Blake McHugh added three goals and Kate Ivory had two goals and three assists for EA, ranked third in the PA Media Rankings. Alexa Buckley had two goals and an assist and Kelley Moore had a goal and an assist.

    Strong defense was turned in by Sammi Arbitman (six groundballs, one interception),  Maggie Forker (three interceptions and five ground balls) and Claire McManus as well as goalie Caitlin Powers (six saves).

   Olivia Mann led GA (7-4, 1-1) with a hat trick and Maggie Ebbott added a pair while  Sidney Jacobs and Kate Henrich had one each.

   The Churchwomen travel to national power St’s Stephens and St’s Agnes (Va.) on Saturday.

Abington 12, Ridley 10

    Kailee Ashby scored five goals and had two assists and Kate Cooper added four goals to lead the Ghosts to the non-league win.

Pennridge 11, Souderton 10
