La Salle, which won the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic (PIAA) boys’ lacrosse championship, finished eighth in the final Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse High School Power Rankings released this morning.
The Explorers (21-4) started the season as the No. 2 team, but dropped their opener to Conestoga and then fell to eventual National champion Gilman (8-7) and No. 4 Calvert Hall (11-10) in heartbreaking overtime games in which La Salle held late leads.
The Explorers then won 20 of its final 21 games – falling only to No. 13 Georgetown Prepp in double overtime (7-6) – along the way. La Salle capped the season by toppling Conestoga, 7-3, in the PIAA title game.
La Salle’s other big wins came over No. 22 West Genesee (7-3), Inter-Ac League co-champions Malvern Prep (4-3 in overtime) and Haverford School (10-3) and St. Joseph’s Prep (twice, the second time in the District 12 title game).
Central League and District 1 champion Conestoga, meanwhile, finished No. 19 in the Power Rankings with a record of 24-2. The Pioneers remained in the Top 25 all season after their win over La Salle.
Gilman opened the season ranked No. 1 and regained the top spot by winning the MIAA A Conference championship, Gilman had one of the nation’s most difficult schedules, a slate that included the teams that finished Nos. 4, 5, 8 and 13 in the final Power Rankings. Additionally, the Greyhounds were paced by their record five Under Armour All-Americans — midfielders Jack Doyle (Harvard) and Greg McBride (North Carolina), attackmen Marcus Holman (North Carolina) and Dave Emala (Georgetown) and defenseman Harry Prevas (Virginina).
