Pennsbury senior defender Ben McDannell has signed a letter of intent to play next year at Division II Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H., becoming the first from his school to sign an early letter.

McDannell, who becomes Franklin Pierce’s first early signee ever, was a first-team All-National Conference pick last year and a second-team choice in 2007.

McDannell first heard about Franklin Pierce from Falcons coach Dean Curtis, who played for Franklin Pierce head coach Kevin Pezanowski when he was an assistant at Ohio State in the early 1990s.

“Coach Curtis sent me an e-mail one day about Franklin Pierce and told me to check it out,” McDannell said. “Their coach was my coach’s coach at Ohio State and he told me to come up for a visit.

“I went up twice and stayed overnight and I really liked everything about it. It’s right over the border of Massachusetts and they have their own mountain on campus, right across the street from the dorms. I snowboard, so that’s a plus.”

McDannell, who will be one of three captains this year for a squad that hopes to challenge for a National Conference title, plans to major in marketing and grahic communications.
