De La Salle (CA) senior middie Nick Richards has committed to play NCAA Division I lacrosse at the University of Pennsylvania.
Richards said he chose Penn over Brown and Ohio State because he felt it was important that his future teammates take their academics as seriously as their lacrosse.
“It was really important for me to be surrounded by student-athletes,” Richards said. “These guys all really seemed to have their priorities straight.”
Richards said he verbally committed to Penn in the summer and was recently accepted to the school via early admission. Recruits at Ivy League schools do not sign national letters of intent, he said.
On top of playing for De La Salle, Richards also participated on the NorCal Grizzlies U17 team that went unbeaten and won the Vail Tournament over the summer.
“I’m really excited to play with East Coast kids,” Richards said. “I think I’ll be able to make the transition well.”
Penn recently signed two other Western recruits, defender Paul Swann of St. Mary’s Hall (TX) and Arapahoe (CO) senior attackman Ryan Parietti.
