Penn downs Drexel, 10-4 to opener season; St. Joseph’s breezes

    The fifth-ranked Penn women’s lacrosse team opened its 2009 season Saturday by defeating rival Drexel, 10-4, at Franklin Field.  

    Junior Ali DeLuca scored three goals and Courtney Lubbe (Council Rock North) scored twice while senior Becca Edwards (Springfield-Montco) had a goal an two assists in her first outing back from a serious knee injury last season.

    Emma Spiro, Giulia Giordano and Barb Seaman each had a goal and an assist for the Quakers while Erin Brennan scored once and Emily Szelest made three saves in goal.

     Becca Drylie-Perkins scored twice for the Dragons (2-1) while Charlotte Wood (Conestoga) and Katie Blazer each scored once. Karen LaBella made 11 saves.

St. Joseph’s 14, Lafayette 2

    Julie Mineweaser (North Penn) and Meghan McDevitt each had three goals and an assist to lead the Hawks (1-1) to an easy win over the Leopards.

Colgate 16, La Salle 1

    Molly Carroll (Strath Haven) scored once for the visitors (2-0) as they coasted past the Explorers (0-1). Jill Davis (Ridley) scored for La Salle.

Georgetown 17, George Washington 2

    Kelly Barnes (Radnor) and Mary Beth Brophy (Archbishop Carroll) scored once goal apiece as the Hoyas opened with an easy win.

James Madison 14, Virginia Tech 9

    Mary Kate Lomady (Abington) and Jaime Dardine (Marple Newtown) scored three goals each as the Dukes opened with a victory.
