Ryan Cranston knew he had to do something special to express his support when he learned his sister-in-law, Caroline Cranston, was diagnosed with leukemia on Aug. 15, 2008.
After watching Caroline suffer through the rigors of chemotherapy for a year, Ryan decided to dedicate a tournament in her honor to raise funds for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS). On Nov. 1 at Henderson – where both he and Caroline went to high school – he will host the Care 4 the Cure tourney for high school aged girls’ teams.
The tournament will be held on five fields, including two turf fields. Games will be 50 minutes in duration and played according to U.S. Lacrosse Women’s rules at a cost of $600 per team.
The name Care 4 the Cure is a play on Caroline’s nickname, “Care.”
“Holding a tourney like this was something I knew would help out,” said Ryan, a standout at Division III Lynchburg who played one year with the San Francisco Dragons of Major League Lacrosse. “She was in remission, but the cancer came back and they are considering options.”
Cranston, though, is still in need of more teams to complete the field. Currently, 10 teams have committed, but there is room for at least several more, preferably five. Cranston will not make any money; all proceeds will go to the LLS.
Each year in the United States, about 2,000 children and 27,000 adults are diagnosed with leukemia. The Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) donates 74 percent of its funds to cancer research and is currently funding 400 scientists worldwide.
At Henderson, Caroline (Gallagher) Cranston was a captain for the lacrosse and soccer teams and she went on to play lacrosse at Duquesne University.
There are other ways to support the cause. Full-page ads are available in the program for $500; half-page ads are $300 and quarter-page ads are $200 while business acrd ads are $100. Any donations will be will accepted and names of donors will be listed under “Friends of Caroline.”
