Strath Haven’s Annalise Penikis was able to joke about the halftime speech by coach Margie Garrity today at the 9th Annual Katie Samson Festival at Radnor High.
That’s because the Panthers rallied for a 16-14 victory over Episcopal Academy, the No. 2 ranked team in the PA Media Lacrosse Rankings.
“On the back of our new shirts we have the word, ‘Consistency,’” aid Penikis. “Mrs Garrity said at halftime, ‘You’ve been consistently awful, so now you have to be consistently good.’ We just came out to play in the second half.”
Indeed, the eighth-ranked Panthers (10-1) listened to their coach. They rebounded from a 10-5 halftime deficit and scored five unanswered goals to take a 14-12 lead.
Emily Garrity led the attack with five goals and two assists while Penikis had three goals and four assists. Ana White had three goals while Kelly Ruffini and Julie Hayward each scored two goals and Molly DiEnno scored once.
Another major key for the Panthers was the stellar play of freshman goaltender Lela Meunier, who had 15 saves.
The Panthers also managed to overcome much adversity. They made 10 unforced turnovers in the opening half and were missing two starters (Alex Duckenfield and Caroline Murphy) due to minor injuries
“It was exciting to win because we know a lot of players on (Episcopal),” said Penikis. “We are so pumped since so many girls stepped up in the second half. “
Strath Haven was ranked No. 2 in the Media Rankings until a one-goal loss to Central League nemesis Springfield-Delco jolted them last week.
“Springfield is a mental thing for us, but after the game we talked about it and we had to move past it,” Penikis said. “One loss to Springfield isn’t going to ruin our season.”
