Haverford School’s J.J. Newland and Rory O’Connor (transfer) head the list of 16 recruits for the University of Vermont men’s lacrosse team for the 2009-2010 season. Head coach Ryan Curtis made the announcement Friday.
Josh Aronson (Lutherville, Md.), Mike Clarke (Dedham, Mass.), Michael Connors (East Walpole, Mass.), Jack Cranston (Coto de Caza, Calif.), Kyle Leman (Barrington, Ill.), A.J. Masson (Newmarket, Ont.), Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass.), Augie Remien (Winnetha, Ill.), Tayler Sipperly (Charlotte, N.C.), Zack Telander (Lake Forest, Ill.), Marty Vanzo (Westford, Vt.), Garrett Virtue (Rye, N.Y.) and Ward Waesche (Greenwich, Conn.) will all join the class of 2013. In addition, transfer Cal Case (Columbus, Ohio) will join the team.
“This year’s class gives us the depth we lacked last year and will allow us to compete athletically with the best teams in the country,” Curtis said. “It’s a large class for us and we expect the majority of our new players to compete and push our upperclassmen immediately. The dynamics of our team will change from a competitive standpoint and we are excited to see how that plays out on the field.”
These are the recruits:
Newland, a 6’0″, 205-pound defenseman, was a part of a Fords; team that won an Inter-Ac League co-championship and then took the playoff championship. He was an Honorable Mention All-Inter-Ac and All-Phillylacrosse.com pick this year. Newland was also a member of the water polo and track teams.
O’Connor, a 5’9″, 195-pound attackman comes to Vermont after transferring from Connecticut College. He scored eight goals and had three assists in eight games for the Camels in 2009. He registered 35 goals and 15 assists for 50 points in his career as a member of the lacrosse team, earning second-team All-Phillylacrosse.com as a senior. He also participated in water polo and track.
Aronson, a 6’0″, 155-pound attackman comes to Vermont from the McDonough School in Owings Mills, Md. He was a member of the lacrosse, football and basketball teams for the Rams. The McDonough lacrosse team posted an 11-7 record last spring.
Case, 6’0″, 180-pound midfielder comes to Vermont after transferring from Stevens Tech in Hoboken, N.J. He played in 15 games for the Ducks last season and scored nine goals and had one assist. Previously he played lacrosse and football at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus, Ohio, from 2004 to 2008.
Clarke, a 6’2″, 215-pound midfielder played lacrosse at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., last season. He earned the “Spalding Hard Hat Award” for his dedication and effort to the lacrosse program that went 13-6 in his senior season. Prior to attending Lawrenceville, Clarke attended Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass., from 2005 to 2008 and he was a member of the lacrosse and hockey teams.
Connors, a 5’9″, 145-pound long stick midfielder comes to Vermont from Walpole High School in Walpole, Mass., where he was a member of the lacrosse and football teams. He was part of the lacrosse team that went 25-1 to earn a Division II Massachusetts state championship in 2009. Connors grabbed 400 ground balls in his career and was a team captain. Twice he was named a Bay State First-Team All-Star. He was part of the Walpole football team that went 13-0 in 2008 and won the Division II Massachusetts Super Bowl.
Cranston, a 6’1″, 210-pound attackman and midfielder played lacrosse and football at Rancho Santa Margarita High School in Santa Margarita, Calif. He was named a 2009 U.S. Lacrosse All-American and was named to the Orange County First-Team. He scored 86 goals and had 39 assists for 125 points as a senior. He also was a safety and a wide receiver for the football team at Rancho Santa Margarita.
Leman, a 5’10”, 175-pound midfielder played lacrosse at Barrington High School in Barrington, Ill., prior to joining the Catamounts. He was team captain and the team’s offensive MVP in 2008 and 2009. Leman scored 33 goals and had 26 assists for 59 points and won 73-percent of his face offs in 2009.
Masson, a 6’1″, 175-pound attackman played lacrosse at Sir William Mullock in Newmarket, Ont., from 2007-2009. He registered 127 points (81 goals, 46 assists) in 2009. Previously he played lacrosse at St. Andrews College in Aurora, Ont., from 2005 to 2007.
Philie (pronounced Feely), a 5’9″, 200-pound attackman played lacrosse, hockey and football at Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass. He posted 23 goals and 22 assists for 45 points in 2009 as a senior. He was a team captain and earned all-league honors.
Remien, a 6’2″, 225-pound midfielder played lacrosse and football at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., in 2008-09. He was a captain for the lacrosse team that went 13-6 in 2009. Previously he attended New Trier High School in Winnethea, Ill., from 2004 to 2008 where he was a member of the lacrosse and football teams.
Sipperly, a 6’2″, 185-pound midfielder comes to Vermont from the Charlotte Latin School in Charlotte, N.C., where he was a member of the lacrosse and football teams. He recorded 45 goals and 23 assists for 68 points in 2009 and posted 160 points in his career as a member of the lacrosse team.
Telander, a 6’4″, 195-pound midfielder played lacrosse, football and basketball and was a member of the swimming team at Lake Forest High School in Lake Forest, Ill. He scored 53 goals and had 21 assists for 74 points in 2009 as a member of the lacrosse team. Inside Lacrosse ranked Telander No. 73 on its list of top-100 Division I incoming freshman for the 2010 season.
Vanzo, a 6’0″, 178-pound attackman played lacrosse, hockey and soccer at Essex High School in Essex Junction, Vt. He was named First-Team All-State in lacrosse in 2008 and 2009. Vanzo posted 42 goals and 35 assists for 77 points as a senior on the way to being named a U.S. Lacrosse All-American.
Virtue, a 6’1″, 170-pound attackman and midfielder played lacrosse, football and basketball at Brunswick High School in Greenwich, Conn. He recorded 25 goals and 15 assists for 40 points as senior on the lacrosse team. He was a member of the Hudson Valley Empire Team that won a bronze medal at the Empire Games.
Waesche (pronounced Way-she), a 6’3″, 200-pound goalie attended Avon Old Farms in Avon, Conn., and played lacrosse and hockey. He posted a .720 save percentage in 2009 for the Winged Beavers, who finished 10-5 on the season. Waesche attended Greenwich High School from 2004 to 2007 and was a member of the lacrosse and hockey teams.
The Vermont men’s lacrosse team is set to host the second annual Catamount Classic – Lacrosse For a Cure on Sunday, Oct. 11 at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass.
