Host Haverford School will be joined Saturday by fellow Pennsylvania powers Malvern Prep and Downingtown East as well as five national powers from the Northeast region for the inaugural Nike “Checking for Cancer” Lacrosse Invitational.
The games are as follows:
*11 a.m. – Georgetown Prep (Md.) vs. Duxbury (Mass.), Class of 75 field
*11:30 a.m. – Haverford School (Pa.) vs. Downingtown East (Pa.), Stadium turf field
*1 p.m. – St Paul’s School (Md.) vs. Garden City (N.Y.), Class of ’75 field
*1:30 p.m. – Malvern Prep (Pa.) vs. Darien (Conn.). Stadium turf field
The tourney features two teams ranked in the Top 25 in the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse National Power Rankings: Georgetown Prep (ninth, 12-2) and Duxbury (13th, 6-0). At one point this year, Malvern Prep (4-4), Haverford School (6-6), St. Paul’s (8-3) and Garden City (8-1) and Darien (2-1) have been in the rankings. Downingtown East (9-1) is ranked sixth in the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Media Rankings.
The event is not only a fundraiser, it is meant to raise awareness for early detection. And it is particularly personal to two of the head coaches. John Nostrant, coach of The Haverford School for 18 years, was diagnosed with prostate cancer 14 months ago. Georgetown Prep coach Kevin Giblin is now receiving treatment for colon cancer.
