Junior attack Bergan Foley (Gwynedd Mercy Academy) has been named the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2009 season.
The announcement was made at the recent Louisville awards banquet. The Cardinals made an immediate mark in only their second season of play by qualifying for the BIG EAST tournament last season.
Coach Kellie Young gave five awards for various achievements.
Foley tallied 61 goals and six assists for 67 points and in just two years she has tallied 122 goals, 11 assists for a total of 133 points. In 2009, she had seven games with five or more points and nine games with four or more goals including six against Villanova, Longwood, Virginia Tech and Loyola and eight in the closing match against UC Davis.
Foley, who was named a co-captain for 2010, was first in Big East in shots per game, second in goals per game, total goals, total shots, third in free position goals per game, sixth in points per game and seventh in total points. She was fifth in the nation in goals per game, tenth in total goals and 21st in points per game. She was named Second Team All-Big East conference, 2nd team All-Region and was Louisville’s sole selection to the Big East All-Tournament Team.
“Being talented is a blessing, being a hard worker is a mindset … and when the two come together, the result creates an interesting phenomenon,” said Young about Foley. “You work hard to get better, you get better, you are expected to perform, you need to work even harder to keep performing and the cycle goes on and on. Only the strongest can handle this existence — mental and physical endurance is required to maintain excellence and we honored one of those kinds of players in Foley.”
Colleen Nevin was named Most Improved Player, and Katie Oliverio and Ashley King were named Rookies of the Year. Emily Dashiell was named U of L’s Unsung Hero which is given annually to the player who does things behind the scenes that are rarely recognized but are invaluable to a team’s success.
