Former Maryland All-American goalkeeper Alex Kahoe (Agnes Irwin School) has been selected as one of nine United States women and 18 overall to represent Ireland for the 2009 Women’s National Team at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup in June.
The team was selected from more than 70 candidates who participated in selection camps, and it will open the tournament – which will be held in Prague, on June 18th – with a game against Korea.
The announcement was made by Irish National Teams Director John Cavanaugh, who said, “We feel that the squad selected has exceptional character and unlimited potential in representing Ireland at the inaugural FIL Women’s World Cup.”
FIL was created in August by the merger of the International Lacrosse Federation and International Federation of Women’s Lacrosse Associations (IFWLA), and this will be the first-ever Irish Women’s Team to compete at the highest worldwide level.
Kahoe, in her third year as an assistant coach at Duke, was previously on the staffs at Delaware, Penn and Maryland. A 2000 graduate Maryland, Kahoe began her coaching career at her alma mater, serving as an assistant for head coach Cindy Timchal (Haverford High, West Chester University) from 2000-2002. The Terrapins won their seventh straight national title in 2001 and advanced to the national quarterfinals in 2002.
Kahoe moved on to Pennsylvania, where she served as an assistant coach under Karin Brower for the 2003 season.
Kahoe enjoyed an outstanding career at Maryland as a goalkeeper, leading the Terrapins to five straight NCAA Division I national titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000, three Atlantic Coast Conference titles, and a combined record of 100-5 during her tenure.
She was a two-time team captain, earned All-America honors in 1998, 1999 and 2000, and was the NCAA Goalie of the Year her final two seasons. In addition, Kahoe was the 1997 ACC Rookie of the Year and the ACC Goalie of the Year three times. She was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary team in 2002. In the spring of 2006, she was selected to the NCAA 25th Anniversary All-Time Women’s Lacrosse team.
Kahoe has been a member of the USA National Lacrosse Team since 1997 and has played with the Toyota Lacrosse Team since 2000. She was selected for and played on the 2005 U.S. World Cup training team, as well.
