Downingtown East was clearly in need of a spark.

And Kyle Marcks provided it.

Marks scored two goals in a 38-second span int eh fourth quarter to help the Cougars defeat West Chester East, 5-2, tonight in a first-round Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) playoff at Radnor.

The win vaults the District 1 runner-up into Saturday’s quarterfinals against the state’s top-ranked team, La Salle, which defeated Central Bucks East, 13-8.

East had rallied from a 2-0 deficit to forge a 2-2 tie when Marcks finally solved Vikings goalie Justin Laxton, who made 12 saves and had kept East (16-6) in the game until then.

Marcks gave his team a 3-2 lead with 9:19 left to play when he put in his own rebound after yet another key saves by Laxton. Then, with 8:421 left, Marcks ripped another past Laxton for a 4-2 lead. Less than two minutes later, Shane Sturgis gave the Cougars (20-3) a three-goal lead.

“The goalie was playing (like he was standing) on his head,” said Marcks. “I knew we needed something and I was held to none all day.

“So, I figured it was about time I put one in – after I has missed three or four.”

Aside from the strong goaltending by Laxton, West Chester East used a stubborn zone defense to frustrate the Cougars’ attack.

“They threw something at us we weren’t used to,” aid Marcks. “They had the zone and they were locking off one of our best guys (Sturgis). We needed one goal to let us know we could score on these guys.”

Downingtown East had taken a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter on a goal by Rocco Piliero. Kenny Maas made it 2-0 early in the second quarter, but the Vikes responded on with a goal by Matt Maday.

East then tied it midway through the third quarter on a tally by Chris McCormick.

East veteran coach Jon Heisman employed several zone defenses in hopes of slowing down the Cougar attack, which riddled East, 14-5, when the teams met in a Ches-Mont League game last month.

“They got those real quick goals after a couple breakdowns in the zone,” Heisman said of the late Cougar flurry. “That’s the kind of game we had to play against them. They’re loaded all the way across the board, and we wanted to keep it close, possess the ball and maybe break through.

“It was 2-2 in the fourth quarter and we had them right where we wanted. But they took care of business at the end.”

Notes: Downingtown East players had a little scare this afternoon when a bomb scare just after 1 p.m. caused an evacuation at the school. “All of our guys were ready to go and we couldn’t be near the school,” said Marcks. “It pushed us back a little bit, but it didn’t hurt too much.”
