Conestoga senior attackman Zach Jacobs has committed to play Division III lacrosse at Haverford College.
Jacobs had 12 goals and 11 assists last year in helping the Pioneers finish 24-2 and reach the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association finals. He also plays for Mesa Fresh 2010, which will compete in the Dick’s Sporting Goods club championship during, the first week of January in Florida.
Jacobs said he has been to camps at Haverford College and already knew first-year coach and former assistant Colin Bathory as well as former coach Mike Murphy (now at Penn). He is unsure of a major, but is considering International Relations.
“My dad went there and one of my favorite things about Haverford is the campus,” said Jacobs, who also plays midfield. “I love how when you drive through the gates you’re in your own world.
“It’s a close-knit campus. I knew coach Murphy well and I know coach Bathory even better now. I’m happy to be a part of his first go-round.”
Last year Haverford College went 13-4 and had a nine-game win streak at one point. The Black Squirels also reached the finals of the Centennial Conference playoffs and hosted their first-ever NCAA playoff game.
Jacobs said he also is excited about the Dick’s tourney. The Mesa Fresh team is loaded with Conestoga players.
“We’ve all played together for so long and hopefully we can win it.” he said.
Jacobs also is focused on the coming scholastic season. The Pioneers will be favorites to return to the state finals – the team has 10 players that have committed to Division I colleges, four more headed to Division III and one going to the defending national champion club team – and Jacobs understands the Central League and the rest of the teams in the region are geared for Conestoga.
“We’re very excited about the season,” he said. “We knew we’ve got to get by Springfield-Delco, and the Haverford School (non-league) game will be great.”
