Courtney Lubbe (Council Rock North) had four goals and Samantha Bird (two assists) and Ali DeLuca each had three to pace third-ranked Penn to an easy 11-3 victory over host Johns Hopkins Wednesday in women’s lacrosse action.

Erin Brennan also scored for the 9-0 Quakers, who got five saves from Emily Szelest.

Three Philadelphia natives – Lisa Bernardini (George School), Ashley Kellogg (Downingtown West) and Sarah Geary (Springfield-Delco) – enjoyed brilliant efforts today and helped host Old Dominion defeat ninth-ranked Virginia, 13-10, for the first time after 32 straight defeats.

The Lady Monarchs (6-2) have played the Cavaliers at least once every season since 1980, with Virginia taking the previous 32 games. It was ODU’s first win over a nationally ranked team since 2004.

Bernardini, a freshman walk-on, led the way with four goals and one assist, while junior Kellogg also added four goals. Redshirt freshman Geary made 12 saves, including several key stops in the second half.

Also for ODU, Erica Erb (Boyertown) was one of several key defenders that stymied the Virginia attack by contributing one caused turnover and one groundball while freshman reserve Rebecca Hartrum (Springfield-Delco) had two groundballs, a draw control and a caused turnover.
