College wrap: Hird (Shipley) helps Wagner snap 48-game losing streak

    Freshman midfielder John Hird (Shipley School) scored two goals as the Wagner College men’s lacrosse team ended a 48-game losing streak with a 12-7 victory over Presbyterian Tuesday.

    For the Seahawks, who are now 1-3 on the season, it marks their first victory since an 11-6 win over Robert Morris on May 1, 2005.

Loyola 7, Siena 5

    Long stick middie P.T. Ricci (Conestoga) scooped nine groundballs and Jake Willcox (Malvern Prep) added two groundballs as the No. 14 Greyhounds (3-1) downed host Siena.

Johns Hopkins 14, UMBC 11

    Kyle Wharton (Haverford School) had two goals and two assists, Brian Christopher (Springfield-Delco) added one goal and one assist while Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep) scored once as the host Blue Jays (2-1) dealt UMBC (3-1) its first loss.

North Carolina 19, Detroit Mercy 3

    Freshman Chris Layne (Malvern Prep) had a goal and four groundballs as the Tar Heels improved to 6-0.

Women

Towson 14, UMBC 8

    Jacie Kendall (Souderton) scored twice as thr Tigers (2-0) remained undefeated.

Penn State 13,

    Goalie Stephanie Ellis (Radnor) made four saves and yielded just two goals in a half as the Nittany Lions remained perfect at 4-0.

Division III

Widener 17, LIN 8

    Jackie Elliott (Upper Darby) pumped in five goals while Mellany Broomall and Calina Walz added four apiece as the Pride evened its record at 1-1.

Alvernia 21, Gwynedd-Mercy 9

    Freshman Kerri Boon (Interboro) notched four goals while Colleen Dellostretto (Upper Moreland) and Victoria Geppert (Pennridge) added two apiece for the Griffins in their loss.
