From press Releases
Chestnut Hill College coach Rich Carrington announced that 38 newcomers will make up the team when the Griffins play their inaugural season in 2010.
“We were fortunate enough to bring in a talented and hungry class,” said Carrington. “This class represents 10 different states and Canadian providences, and we look forward to the challenge of becoming a competitive and cohesive unit despite our youth.”
Strong teams are always developed with defense first and Carrington is confident about the team’s future with the talent and leadership he will have on defense and in goal. The Griffins feature a number-of captains and proven leaders on the defensive unit.
Chris Green (Auburn, N.Y.) and Zack Hiller (Dunkirk, Md.) are two junior college transfers with leadership experience. Bill Brush (Rushland, Pa.) and Alex Frederick (Landisville, PA.) captained Council Rock North High School and Hempfield High School, respectively. Additionally, Tom Carfagna (Laury Station, Pa.), Jon Curtis (Harleysville, Pa., Lansdale Catholic), Danny Garavito (Miami, Fla.), D.J. Lynch (Mullica Hill, N.J.), Joshua Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa., Cardinal O’Hara), and Joe Rucinsky (Camp Hill, Pa.) come to Chestnut Hill College with high recommendations on their leadership abilities.
Three freshmen, David Cutler (Morrisville, Pa., Pennsbury), Andrew D’Addona (Norristown, Pa., La Salle), and Dakota Maurer (Lititz, Pa.), will be competing next season for the top keeper spot. As a senior, Cutler received the prestigious George Kruse Award and earned 2nd team All-League honors. D’Addona also earned All-Catholic League honors while helping national power La Salle win the first Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) State Championship. Maurer, a two-year captain, earned All-League honors and recorded an astounding 140 saves last season for Warwick High School.
The Griffins’ midfield is athletic and built for speed. Freshman Dan Bohon (Lincoln University, Pa.) is a multiple time All-League and All-Area honoree from Avon Grove. Freshman Junji Wiener (Houston, Tex.) produced a strong season for Memorial High School, and he received All-American nominations for his efforts. Freshmen Charles Stroble (Ellicott City, Md.), Ricky Norman (Stafford, Va.), and Alex Sabia (Conshohocken, Pa., Roman Catholic) provide size, speed, and the ability to faceoff. Between the lines freshmen D.J. Klusaritz (Allentown, Pa.), Mark Winkelspecht (Laury Station, PA.), and Mike Viviano (Poughquag, N.Y.) will also provide a big boost.
On attack, the Griffins will feature some talented scorers and feeders. Sophomore Ryan Maloney (Seaford, N.Y.), a transfer from Nassau Community College, has the ability to finish from the outside and in tight. Freshman Shane Morlock (Whitby, Ontario) comes to Chestnut Hill College after a season of Junior-A Box Lacrosse in the Ontario Lacrosse Association. Freshman Mark Lively (Anmore, B.C.) is a duel-threat, offensive player with experience playing in the British Columbia Junior-A Box Lacrosse League and the under-19 providential team. Freshmen Pat Murray (Havertown, Pa., Cardinal O’Hara), Nate Tharp (Laurel, Md.), and Mike Wenz (Portland, Or.) will also aid the scoring efforts.
Chestnut Hill College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, East Coast Conference (ECC). The Griffins open their inaugural season on Feb. 27 when they host the Knights of Neumann University.
