Maura Johnson scored three goals to lead Cape Henlopen to an 11-7 victory over St. Andrew’s May 21 in the finals of the Delaware High School Girls Lacrosse Tournament at Bill Billings Alumni Stadium.
The Vikings became the first team to win the state crown besides St. Andrew’s (six titles) or Tower Hill (five titles) since the tourney was instituted in 1998.
Senior goalie Leigh Ann Redefer had eight saves for Cape Henlopen (16-2-1), the top seed. The Vikings finished with seven straight wins and broke a 12-game win streak by No. 2 St. Andrew’s (15-4).
Kaci Coveleski, Alec Perry and Caroline Judge each added two goals for Cape Henlopen. Grace Saliba and Madison Beres scored two goals apiece for St. Andrew’s, which trailed, 10-4, at halftime.
Sammie Reed, Lindsey Shook and Kara Voss led the Cape Henlopen defense. Cape Henlopen lost in the 2005 final to St. Andrew’s in its only other championship game appearance.
Redefer was later named Honorable Mention All-American for Cape Henlopen while Judge, Perry and Voss were named All-State and Coveleski earned Academic All-American honors.
