Junior Cara Filippelli, an Archbishop Carroll graduate, has been named as one of three co-captains for the Loyola University (MD) women’s lacrosse team for the 2010 season, second year head coach Jen Adams announced this week.
Also named were senior Courtney Burhans and junior Abby Rehfuss. The trio was selected by a vote of their peers, as well as the Greyhounds’ coaching staff for their inspiring presence on and off the field.
“I am pleased to announce our captains for the 2010 season,” said Adams. “Each brings a strong sense of leadership, character, and work ethic that we are proud to associate with our program. I am confident that our captains are the right combination of people to represent and lead us into our exciting future.”
Filippelli started all 17 games in the midfield for the `Hounds last season, recording 20 points on 15 goals and five assists. A first-team all-conference selection, Filippelli led the BIG EAST causing 2.29 turnovers per game as the Greyhounds led the nation in that category.
Now a two-time co-captain, Burhans has served as a backup goalkeeper and emotional leader for the team during her first three seasons at Loyola. A native of Bayville, N.Y., Burhans has appeared in 13 games in her career, tallying 12 saves in over 95 minutes of play.
A prolific scorer as well as a draw control specialist, Rehfuss led the team with 46 draw controls en route to earning second-team all-conference laurels as a sophomore. While starting all 17 games last season, Rehfuss finished second on the team with 32 goals and 48 points.
