Two sophomores from Archbishop Carroll led Monmouth University’s women to a 13-5 record in 2008.
Attacker Megan Brennan scored 38 goals and added 12 assists for the Hawks, while goalie Monica Johnson started every game and posted a solid goals-against average of 9.76.
Monmouth tied for the Northeast Conference (NEC) regular-season title before bowing to Sacred Heart, 12-11, in the league semifinals.
Brennan, 2007 NEC Rookie of the Year, earned second-team all Northeast Conference honors. She also had 23 groundballs and 19 draw controls. Johnson had 173 saves and was sixth in Division I with a .513 save percentage. Twice she earned NEC Defensive Player of the Week
Another key for the Hawks was senior defender Jackie Trainer (Council Rock South), who started 16 of 18 games and collected 22 groundballs, 17 draw controls and nine caused turnovers.
Also for Monmouth, sophomore midfielder Perry DeWitt (Great Valley) had five goals and 18 draw controls in 16 games and seven starts. Sophomore defender Kelly Bosco (Archbishop Carroll) had three groundballs in 11 games.
The highlight of the season occurred April 3 when Brennan’s goal with 47 seconds left in the fourth overtime lifted the Hawks to a thrilling 12-11 victory over host Villanova. Brennan had three goals in the contest and Johnson posted 15 saves.
