The Cabrini men’s lacrosse team will aim for its 11th straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) championship after routing visiting Immaculata, 23-3, today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

Senior midfielder Paul Skulski (Garnet Valley) led the Cabrini attack with five points, pairing two goals with three assists. Junior midfielder Joe Arrell (Springfield-Delco) notched four points with three scores and one helper.

Cabrini (11-5) will host Marywood University – a 14-4 winner over Gwynedd-Mercy College tonight – on Saturday in the finals. Game time is to be determined.

Senior attackman Jordan Coeyman (New Hope-Solebury), junior attackman Brian Hill (Ridley), sophomore attackman Jeff Crosby and sophomore midfielder Bobby Thorp each contributed three points for Cabrini, netting two goals and adding one assist.

Sophomore midfielder Andrew Layne (Malvern Prep) and freshman attackman Louis LaCour both totaled two points with one goal and one assist. The Cavaliers’ offense out-shot Immaculata, 64-26, and boasted 21 players with at least one point in the win.

Cabrini also won the groundball battle by a convincing margin, 56-28. Senior defenseman Steve Heaps and senior midfielder Joe Strain led the charge, each scooping a team-high five groundballs.

Strain led the Blue & White in face-off circle, winning 4-of-7 draw attempts. Senior Mark Hamilton went 2-for-3 at the X.

Freshman goalkeeper Erick Zarzecki started his 34th straight game in the cage for the Cavaliers and recorded five saves for his 26th career win. Freshman Steve Oppenheimer came on in relief, playing nearly 12 minutes and posted two saves.

Cabrini out-shot IU in the first quarter, 14-4, and led 4-0 following 15 minutes of play. Arrell’s first goal of the game at the 11:20 mark of the second quarter pushed the Blue & White’s lead to 6-0.

Yet, the Mighty Macs closed the first half on a 3-2 run and trailed by just five goals at the intermission, 8-3. Thorp led the Cavaliers’ attack at the intermission with two points on two goals.

Cabrini opened the second half with a man-down goal from Hill and never looked back. Crosby netted two goals in the third period and the Cavaliers owned a comfortable 14-3 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Arrell pushed the Blue & White lead to 16-3 with 12:37 remaining. Several reserves saw action late in the game, including LaCour, freshman midfielder Pat Nolan (Plymouth Whitemarsh) nd freshman midfielder Charles Stephens, who each scored their first career goal in the final stanza.

Mike Boyd (Perkiomen Valley), Chaz Gorman (Great Valley) and Joey Shallow (Lower Merion) each scored one goal for Immaculata (6-9) in the season-ending loss. Mike Nesci added one assist.

Jon Diodati (Henderson) tallied 15 saves for IU.

The victory extends the Cavaliers’ win streak against CSAC opponents to 103, including the postseason, since the 2001 campaign. Also, the victory stands as the 149th in the career of 11th-year head coach Steve Colfer.

From Press Releases

For the 11th consecutive season under 11-year head coach Steve Colfer, the Cabrini men’s lacrosse team has finished its Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule with an unblemished regular season mark.

The host Cavaliers scored seven goals in the third quarter and limited Immaculata University to only two second half tallies en route to a 17-5 victory on Saturday at Draper Walsh Stadium.

Senior Mike Gurenlian (Springfield Delco) won 13-of-15 face-off attempts and took over sole possession of the Cavaliers’ all-time career record with 343. Heading into Saturday’s game, Gurenlian needed just two draw victories to overcome the program’s previous recordholder, current assistant head coach Mike Dolente (331, 2006-09).

Senior attackman Jordan Coeyman (New Hope–Solebury) powered the Cabrini attack with a team-best six points on five goals and one assist. Senior midfielder Paul Skulski (Garnet Valley) had two goals and two assists and senior midfielder Dan Terenick (Ridley) added three goals and an assist.

Skulski’s two-assist performance against the Mighty Macs makes him only the third Cavalier in program history to reach 100 career assists, joining Springfield-Delco coach Tom Lemieux (131, 1999-02) and Casey Grugan (128, 2007-10).

Terenick’s four-point afternoon brings him within just four points of 100 for his career at Cabrini. He would be the second member of the Blue & White to accomplish the scoring feat this season, joining junior Brian Hill (Ridley).

Hill aided the Cavaliers on the attack, netting three goals. Sophomore attackman Jeff Crosby also posted three points with two scores and one helper.

Immaculata (6-8, 3-3) was led by Dante Tuscai (West Chester East, three goals) and Joey Shallow (Lower Merion, one goal, one assist. Jon Diodati (Henderson) made 13 saves.

Cabrini went 19-for-23 in the face-off circle for the game, including a 10-for-12 clip in the second half. Senior Joe Strain complemented Gurenlian’s efforts with a 6-for-7 performance on draws.

The Cavaliers owned a convincing 43-23 advantage in groundballs. Senior defenseman Steve Heaps sophomore longstick midfielder Tim Grenier (Ridley) and freshman midfielder JoJo Cooper each scooped a team-best four.

Cabrini (10-5) earned the No. 1 seed in the postseason tournament and begins its quest for an 11th straight CSAC crown on Tuesday, May 3 at Edith Robb Dixon Field against Immaculata. Game time against the Mighty Macs is set to be announced.

From Press Releases

Immaculata University Director of Athletics and Recreation Patricia Canterino has announced Christian Zwickert as the Mighty Macs’ head men’s lacrosse coach as well as Coordinator of Intramurals and Fitness Center.

Christian Zwickert

“I feel fortunate to have someone as experienced as Christian leading our men’s lacrosse program,” Canterino said. “He will be a great asset for Immaculata University and I look forward to the future of Immaculata Lacrosse under his leadership.”

Zwickert, who becomes the program’s third head coach and first full-time mentor, brings nine years of collegiate coaching experience to Immaculata, including five at the head coaching level. Zwickert most recently served as the head men’s lacrosse coach at Wesley College in Dover, Del., from 2004-08.

“I am excited and honored to be named the program’s first full-time head coach,” said Zwickert, a 1995 graduate of the University of Delaware. “There is an incredible level of support for athletics here at Immaculata University. I look forward to helping this relatively young program and its student-athletes continue to reach levels of success on and off the field.”

Zwickert inherits a men’s lacrosse program that has grown each season since its inception in 2007. The Mighty Macs are coming off their most successful campaign to date, winning a program-best nine games and qualifying for the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs for the first time.

While at Wesley, Zwickert served as both the head lacrosse coach and Director of Intramurals. He authored a 42-34 (.553) record and four-straight winning seasons during his five-year tenure while qualifying for the conference tournament all five years.

He was named the 2004 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Coach of the Year in his first campaign with the Wolverines. Zwickert also served as the PAC and Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) representative for the USILA Division III Coaches Poll from 2005 through 2008. He also served on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee for Division III for three years.

Zwickert directed and organized all aspects of Wesley’s intramural program, including marketing, implementation and evaluation of programs offered, formation of teams, development of guidelines and schedules and supervision of work-study employees. Zwickert also held positions in intramurals and fitness at both Providence College and Franklin & Marshall College.

Zwickert began his coaching career at the high school level in Delaware at Delcastle High School as an assistant in 1995 and moved to head coach for the 1997 and 1998 seasons leading the team to their first winning seasons with 10-4 and 9-7 records. Zwickert then moved on to Division I Providence College where he was responsible for assisting both on offense and defense and as goalkeeper coach in 1999. He also served as South Region recruiting coordinator for the Friars.

A 1990 graduate of Salesianum School in Wilmington, Delaware, he returned to his high school Alma Mater as head coach in 2000 and guided Salesianum to a third place regular season finish.

He returned to the college ranks in 2001 as an assistant coach at Dartmouth College, where he handled various coaching duties.

In 2002, Zwickert moved to Franklin & Marshall College where he served as an assistant coach and the offensive and recruiting coordinator. The Diplomats finished as the ECAC South Region champions during his one season. He returned to the Division I level during the 2003 season as the special teams assistant coach at Drexel University.

Zwickert has also coached at the national level as a head coach and assistant general manager for the Polish National Team beginning in 2008. Poland finished 14th at the 2010 World Games in Manchester, England.

He also served as the German National Team’s head coach in 2001, leading Germany to a perfect 6-0 record and winning the nation’s first European Championship in Cardiff, Wales. From 1998-2000, Zwickert was a national team player for Germany as both a midfielder and attackman.

He has held various other positions in the lacrosse community ranging from Vice President of Sales for Onyx Lacrosse to coaching lacrosse as head coach at Salesianum School, The Sanford School and DelCastle Technical and Vocational High School. He is currently the Owner and Director of Silverbacks High School Recruiting Travel Teams, Director of Coaching and Player development for the Silverbacks Youth Lacrosse Program, and is a board member and co-vice president of the Delaware Lacrosse Foundation.

Zwickert is actively involved in the community, serving on the Traumatic Brain Injury Council and on the board of directors for United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware where he is the founder and co-director for Lacrosse for Cerebral Palsy, which is an annual recruiting tournament for Cerebral Palsy awareness and is a fundraiser for United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware’s Summer Camp program available to children of all types of disabilities.

Zwickert received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education Studies from Delaware in 1995.

Martin Mullen, who guided the Immaculata University men’s lacrosse team to its first playoff berth and winning season in his first year as head coach, has resigned for personal business reasons.

Mullen (Downingtown High School graduate) led the Mighty Macs – in their fourth season of NCAA play – to a 9-6 record in 2010. Immaculata earned the fourth seed in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) and then fell to eventual champion Cabrini, 26-3, in the first round of the playoffs.

In their first three years, the Mighty Macs had won seven games.

Mullen said he told the team Friday evening. He noted that he had high expectations for the 2011 season and was looking forward to coaching the Mighty Macs in the upcoming Nick Colleluori Classic Oct. 10 at Ridley High.

“It was a great experience,” Mullen said. “It was great turning the program around. I will really miss them.”

Under Mullen, Immaculata freshman midfielder Ben Tuscai captured the CSAC Rookie of the Year award and five Mighty Macs earned all-league status. John Cacchio, Dante Tuscai, Tom Hartney and Andrew Sim all joined Ben Tuscai on the honorable mention team.

In 2011, the Mighty Macs open the season on Feb. 23 at Franklin & Marshall. Immaculata then opens the home portion of the slate on Wednesday, March 9 against Penn State Abington.

Mullen, a former assistant at Bishop Shanahan, served as an assistant coach to Bob Bush during the program’s first three seasons.

Mullen has served as a coach with the Black Bear Lacrosse Club and was head coach of the Falcons Lacrosse Club. Mullen earned All-Chest-Mont honors as a midfielder at Downingtown. He later went on to play at St. Joseph’s University and West Chester University (club).
