High School: William Penn Charter

Graduation Year: 2013

Position: Attack

College Choice: Saint Joseph’s University

Club Affiliation: Dukes Lacrosse Club

What will you major in/study? Business

Why did you choose St. Joe’s? “When I first had the chance to visit Saint Joseph’s University, I knew it was the right fit for me. I also knew I wanted to study business at a local university. Saint Joe’s has a great business school, a beautiful campus, and the lacrosse team is making great strides with the new coaching staff in place. I know Coach (Taylor) Wray and Coaches (Dan & Michael) Keating are committed to building the program to compete with the best teams in the country, and that’s what I can’t wait to be part of.”

Outlook for your High School team for 2013? “Like always, our team’s outlook for next year is the same that it’s been in the past, to win the Inter-ac and to finish the season with the best record possible. Although we are losing many talented seniors, we are also returning many skilled players that can really contribute all over the field.”

Additional Comments: “I would like to thank all my coaches from Abington Lacrosse Club, Coach Pat McDonough for all his time he puts in on and off the field, Coach Ebe Helm, Coach Jason Christmas, Coach Mckrides, and the Dukes Lacrosse Club coaching staff. I would also like to thank my parents for all their support and Coach (Taylor) Wray and Coaches (Dan and Mike) Keating for allowing me this opportunity.”

Baggataway Lacrosse Club is proud to announce the following events upcoming this summer for World Champion Lacrosse. Baggataway Coaches will be at these events helping youth lacrosse players learn the finer side of the sport.

World Champ Camp

A youth day camp at Plymouth Whitemarsh HS Victory Fields will be the setting for the second year of the highly successful World Champ Camp. Boys in Grade K-6 can come out for four days of learning and fun from 9am-2pm.

This summer there will be two sessions available for registration: Session 1 – 6/18-21 & Session 2 – 8/6-10. Both camps will be directed by Brian “Doc” Dougherty Goalie for the 2010 Team USA. Players work on fundamental aspects of the game during the morning and play in games in the afternoon. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from a World Champion.

Brotherly Love Lacrosse Camp

The first annual overnight or extended day camp at Chestnut Hill College, exclusively for Shooters and Goalies is run by World Champion Lacrosse. Brian Dougherty and Drew Adams will head up the Goalie side of camp teaching players the “Philly Style” of playing between the pipes.

If you are a Youth or HS Goalie, this is the best camp in the world for making you a better Goalie. Adam Eddinger and Ray Kendrick will direct the shooters in camp through various tactics and techniques.

Both Shooters and Goalies will be videotaped during certain drills and have their actions critiqued in “Film Sessions” to break from the heat in camp. Some of the amenities players can look forward to in the week are Air Conditioned Dorms, Indoor Pool, Game Rooms, Film Sessions and fun on the field.

The Malvern Prep defense and the Friars’ offense finally put it together today.

The Friars jumped to a 7-1 halftime lead and coasted past visiting Penn Charter, 9-2, in the quarterfinals of the Inter-Ac Invitational.

The victory vaults the fourth-seeded Friars (8-9) into Monday’s semifinals against rival and top-seeded Haverford School (an 11-3 winner over Shipley School) at Cabrini College. Episcopal Academy and Lawrenceville School will meet in the other semifinal.

Eddie McLoughlin scored three times and PJ Finley won 11 of 13 face-offs while also scoring a goal as the Malvern offense came out firing and helped the Friars claim their third win this year over the Quakers (13-12).

Finley’s domination at the dace-off X helped Malvern maintain ball control throughout the game, limiting the Quaker’s chances to mount a comeback.

“The success was all on my wing-guys,” said Finley. “I was going against a long pole so it made it tough to decide which way to go. I was lucky enough to get the ball out to my teammates.”
Malvern’s other tallies came from a variety of sources. Tommy O’Connor scored twice while Kevin McGreary, Sean Irvine, and Russell Atkinson contributed a goal each. Matt Barrett played phenomenal in goal, notching 16 saves.

Malvern’s defense dominated the Quakers all game. The unit was led by Eddie Morris, Jack Sheridan, and Chad Rafferty.

“With it being a playoff game, I was happy the seniors took care of business on their last game on this campus.” said Malvern Prep coach David Metzbower. “The defense has come up big all year. They’ve been constantly good, and with any mistakes they made Matt Barrett was right there to clean it up.”

For Penn Charter, it was a tough way to end a strong season. Drew Murray and Eric Berger each scored once while Jackson Tamasitis had 12 saves.

“Malvern came ready to play,” said Penn Charter coach Pat McDonough “They took advantage of opportunities and capitalized on them. Credit goes out to them.”
McDonough didn’t want his seniors to dwell too much on the loss.

“I told the guys that one game doesn’t make your season,” he said. “We had a pretty good season and played well until the end. I feel badly the seniors had to end like this today.”
Malvern now looks ahead to Haverford School in the semifinals of the tournament. Haverford won both meetings, 9-4 and 13-7.

“We need to play all four quarters against Haverford,” said senior captain Morris. “Coming out fast is critical and we need to prevent their big time players from getting easy goals.”

From Press Release

Following his 10th season at the helm of the Lafayette men’s lacrosse program, Terry Mangan has stepped down as the Leopards’ Head Coach.

“Terry is a valuable asset to our lacrosse program and community,” Director of Athletics Bruce McCutcheon said. “I am saddened by his decision to leave Lafayette. He will be difficult to replace.”

Mangan will serve as the Regional Director for PreGame Lacrosse, a national recruiting education and evaluation service, which was founded in 2011 by former college lacrosse coaches Jim Stagnitta and Tony Seaman. Mangan’s resignation becomes effective June 1, 2012.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am leaving Lafayette, but I am excited about this new opportunity and moving on to the next chapter,” Mangan said. “I have been very lucky to have coached such great kids and to have worked with terrific assistant coaches. My fellow coaches, administrators and support staff have made Lafayette truly a great place to be a coach.”

Mangan, who was the 2010 Patriot League Coach of the Year, guided Lafayette to its only Patriot League Tournament berth in program history two seasons ago. Lafayette was also ranked in both top 20 polls for eight consecutive weeks and stood as high as eighth in the nation in 2010. That season, and in 2011, Mangan had Stephan Bauer ’11 and Tom Perini ’11 named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch Lists. Perini and Steve Serling ’10 were both honored as USILA Scholar All-Americans as seniors, while Serling became the first All-America selection since James Dyson ’33 was a Second Team honoree in 1931.

This past year, Mangan coached graduating senior Doug Prusoff and rising junior Jake Hyatt, who were both named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team following the season. Mangan also mentored 55 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll selections over the past two seasons, the highest total in the league over that span.

Prior to his time on College Hill, Mangan spent two seasons at the University of Massachusetts and served as the defensive coordinator and goalkeeper coach at Hobart College from 1996-2000.

“I want to thank Coach Mangan for his selfless, dedicated service to Lafayette and our athletics program,” McCutcheon continued. “I wish him every success in his new venture.”

The first mainstream lacrosse movie – “CROOKED ARROWS” – debuted Tuesday night in Philly at a special premiere showing at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute to rave reviews.

The movie, in fact, is much more than a lacrosse movie.

It is a movie about history, a movie about respect for a forgotten and often unknown Native American culture. It is a movie about honor to one’s self and to one’s team. It is a movie about the underdog, that “corny” Mighty Ducks-type story that we love so much and never seems to get old.

It is a movie about owning up to past mistakes and making amends.

It’s a movie about faith.

Yes, CROOKED ARROWS is about the journey of an arrow and how it takes many turns before reaching its final destination. But it is also about the journey of a team and a man. It hits home – for lacrosse players, and those who never have picked up a stick or watched the sport even once.

CROOKED ARROWS opens in theaters around the Philly region and other select cities on Friday. It opens nationally June 1. It’s the ideal movie for a lacrosse team to see together because it’s about teamwork and how far you can go when you work as a unit and put your own needs behind the team goal.

Two of the actors in the movie attended the premiere Tuesday – the CROOKED ARROWS goalie, Michael Hudson (Reed) and Crystal Allen (Dr. Julie Gifford), the love interest of the movie’s top star, Brandon Routh.

In the film, Routh plays Joe Logan, a mixed-blood Native American trying to find his spirit and prove himself to his father, Ben Logan, a traditionalist Tribal Chairman. Joe Logan accepts the job of coaching a rag-tag reservation lacrosse team of the Sunaquot, the fictional seventh tribe of the Haudenosaunee.

That journey is the focus of the movie, but also touches many other journeys. All are connected to the sport of lacrosse.

Also on stage Tuesday were Director Steve Rash, and co-producers J. Todd Harris and Mitchell Peck.

Hudson (who plays Reed), a Bensalem native and resident of Central Pennsylvania, must learn to deal with his fears of playing goalie in the movie. Like all the actors except Allen (Dr. Gifford), he is Native American. He did play lacrosse for several years, though he was a midfielder and never played in the goal.

“The move is a man’s journey in finding himself,” said Hudson. “It shows what lacrosse means to the Native American people, spiritually and emotionally.

“It shows what it means to our culture. There are several storylines. It shows how lacrosse brings your strengths out through different ways.”

Hudson, who began his professional career as a model, calls his character a “pretty boy” in the movie.

“He’s a pretty boy who is a little bit afraid of hurting himself,” he said. “He has this journey of becoming a good lacrosse goalie through different ways of motivation.”

Allen, of Calgary, plays a history teacher on the reservation where Routh is coaching. She teaches many of his players and at first she and Logan clash, but she helps Logan rediscover his faith and honor to the reservation and the sport of lacrosse after seeing his initial intentions of making money for his people by building casinos.

Interestingly, Allen is the only non-Native American actor in the movie. Her passion for Native American culture, though, is integral.

“Throughout the time he is teaching the kids lacrosse he comes back to his roots,” she said of Logan’s journey. “I basically challenge him. The Native American heritage has always been important to (my character).

“It’s quite a spiritual film. He gets down on himself. But he grows. I think the women in the film – his sister, played by Chelsea Ricketts – and my character push him in a way to make him see there is more to life than making money in casinos.

“He grows and has this awareness. The heart of it is these kids and the game of lacrosse. Joe realizes that’s what is in (his) heart and in (his) blood.”

The event Tuesday was hosted by the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association and sponsored by ThunderBay.

Take the team, take the family, see the movie. It is well done, well written, funny and heartwarming. It is good for the sport and we could all use a reminder of its lessons.
