Following season-opening wins, North Carolina junior midfielder Marie McCool (Moorestown) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, and Louisville senior defender Stephanie McNamara is this week’s Defensive Player of the Week.
One of the ACC’s top scorers from last season, McCool picked up right where she left off and tied her career high with six goals and set a career high with eight total points in North Carolina’s 16-14 win over James Madison on Saturday in Raleigh. The Moorestown, New Jersey, native scored on what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 10:40 remaining in the game and assisted on the Tar Heels’ final tally to give them a two-goal cushion. She added five draw controls, three caused turnovers and a ground ball.
Along with the Tar Heels’ and Cardinals’ wins, the ACC went 4-1 in last weekend games as Duke and Boston College also picked up victories. All eight ACC teams will be in action this week.
