Reigning ACC and NCAA Champion North Carolina has been chosen to repeat as the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s lacrosse champion in a vote by the league’s eight head coaches.
The defending NCAA Champion Tar Heels received seven first-place votes en route to 63 total points, followed by Syracuse (one first-place vote, 52 points) and Notre Dame (50 points). Duke was selected fourth (37 points), while Boston College and Virginia each earned 29 points to tie for fifth. Louisville (20) was picked to finish seventh and Virginia Tech (8) eighth.
The Preseason All-ACC Team features three returning IWLCA First Team All-Americans and six total All-Americans from the 2016 season. Six of the eight ACC institutions were recognized on the Preseason All-ACC Team, led by North Carolina with six selections. Notre Dame and Syracuse each had two student-athletes named to the team, while Duke, Louisville and Virginia each had one student-athlete tabbed. All 13 members of the Preseason All-ACC Team were also named Preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse.
Returning IWLCA First Team All-Americans named to the Preseason All-ACC Team include North Carolina senior attacker Molly Hendrick (Manheim Township) and junior midfielder Marie McCool (Moorestown), and Notre Dame senior attacker Cortney Fortunato. Duke junior midfielder Maddie Crutchfield, North Carolina senior attacker Sammy Jo Tracy and Notre Dame senior midfielder Casey Pearsall are IWLCA Second and Third Team honorees from a season ago. Rounding out the Preseason All-ACC Team are Louisville defender Steph McNamara, North Carolina junior midfielder Maggie Bill, senior defender Maggie Auslander and senior goalie Caylee Waters, Syracuse junior attacker Riley Donahue and senior defender Kaeli O’Connor, and Virginia senior defender Maggie Preas.
Boston College (at Holy Cross), North Carolina (vs James Madison) and Louisville (vs Vermont) kick off the 2017 season on Saturday, Feb. 4. Duke (vs Drexel) and Notre Dame (vs Northwestern) begin the season on Sunday, Feb. 5.
The ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship will be played April 27, 28 and 30 at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia.
