With a swing of her stick at 15:57 into the first half, senior Allee Ilgenfritz sent the ball flying past the Iona goalkeeper’s outstretched limbs to reach a career milestone of 100 goals to help La Salle to a tough 10-9 win over Iona on Sunday at McCarthy Stadium.

The two teams were knotted up 5-5 after a gritty first half of back and forth when Iona netted three unanswered goals at the beginning of the second half to take the lead.

The Explorers (4-3) fought back thanks to a pair of goals from Brittany Edwards and Toni Massetti (Kennett) to leave the Explorers trailing by just one.

When Iona scored again to lead 9-7 with 15:39 remaining in play, the Explorers sprung into action to net three goals to take the contest. Ilgenfritz added another goal, while Edwards posted back-to-back goals to give La Salle the victory.

Leading all scoring was Edwards, who tallied four goals on the day while Ilgenfritz and Massetti added two each. Anna Gordon and Nicole Black also added a goal apiece in the tight contest.

A midfield duo of Gordon and Isabel Caddick posted two caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls each. Rachel Ceplo picked up three ground balls for La Salle to contribute to the Explorers 23 total.

Gordon also added two draws, with Edwards and Courtney Woolford each matching Gordon’s two of La Salle’s nine won draws.

Lynne Frankel and Lucy Loughlin split time in goal, with Frankel recording six saves and Loughlin added two in the second stanza.

Paced by senior attacker Nora McCallion’s (Academy of Notre Dame) five-point effort (3G, 2A), the visiting Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak at Waldron Family Stadium. With the victory, the Hawks improve to 3-4 while the Mountaineers fall to 0-5.

Tied 11-11, junior midfielder Aly Gormley (Springfield-Delco) fired off the eventual game-winner with 7:01 remaining in regulation.
