Widener’s Taylor (Archbishop Ryan) earns two major academic honors

Widener seniors Tim Taylor (Archbishop Ryan) and Marc LaVine (Nashua, N.H.) and were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team, as voted by sports information offices at 30 institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Both student-athletes are being recognized for the second straight season.

Taylor made the All-MAC Commonwealth First Team this season as the Pride’s leading scorer, racking up 53 points on 38 goals and 15 assists. He also ranked second in the league in goals per game (2.53) and fourth in points per game (3.53) this past spring. Taylor, a four-year starter, finished his career with 116 goals and 51 assists for 167 points. The attackman netted his 100th career marker in a win over Lycoming on his senior day in the snow and ended the season ranked 10th on the program’s all-time scoring list.

Taylor’s honor is his second major academic honor in two days. On Monday he was named as a USILA Academic All-American.

LaVine was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year and has also garnered All-MAC Commonwealth laurels three times, making the first team twice and the second team once. The two-time captain contributed 11 goals and a team-best 16 assists for 27 points this season to help the Pride advance to the semifinal round of the conference tournament. In addition, LaVine finished his career with 119 career points on 74 goals and 45 helpers. Off the field, the midfielder was a Widener University Student Ambassador and mentor for freshmen and underclassmen at the institution.

Following today’s announcement, Widener has now had 12 student-athletes who have made the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team in their respective sport during the 2015-16 academic year. Honorees for additional spring sports will be announced throughout the week.
