Will Huestis had three goal and an assist and Hunter Mazur scored twice as host Strath Haven defeated Harriton, 7-2, Thursday to clinch at least a tie for its first Central League championship ever.

The Panthers (14-2, 9-1) moved a game ahead of Conestoga – whicb was edged by Penncrest, 9-8 – and Garnet Vally, both of which are 8-2 in the league Strath Haven plays its final league game Tuesday at Garnet Valley where it could an outright title. A Jaguar win would force at least a two-way tie for the title. Conestoga plays last-place Upper Darby in its finale on Tuesday and can finish 9-2 with a win.

The title for Strath Haven comes in Year 4 of coach Jef Hewlings’ tenure. Strath haven has increased its win total each year under Hewlings, and he said this team is special.

“I’ve had the opportunity to coach a lot of teams, and the ones that were successful generally had two things – a mental toughness that allows them to overcome their mistakes and the right chemistry that allows them to work hard together,” said Hewlings, who also has coached Malvern Prep, Penncrest, and Emmaus.

Sam Mutz and Jake Ross each had a goal and an assist for the Panthers and Will Brake had four saves. Ian Walsh posted 13 saves for Harriton.

“This team has worked hard together since the seniors were freshmen,” said Hewlings. “They have committed themselves to being the best they can be, and they’ve fully embraced the spirit of team – each guy does what he can do to make the team better, and that includes the guys that don’t get all the playing time.”
