Freshman Ibo Pio scored the game winner in a “Braveheart” style OT as Providence Road Lacrosse toppled Conestoga, 8-7, Saturday to claim the annual Brian Houshower Tournament at Downingtown West.
Providence Road and Conestoga each went 3-0 in pool play to reach the title game. (The top two teams play for the championship).
In the final, Conestoga held a 4-1 lead before Providence Road stormed back and led, 6-5. Conestoga scored twice to take a 7-6 lead, but Providence Road tied it late in regulation.
Coaches credited a strong all-around team effort by all players on Providence Road. The team consisted of: Gage Bailey, Will Brake, Mike Bufalo, Liam Carney, Hunter Clements, Tyler Fink, Joe Healy, Zack Irons, Wade Mutz, Jake Nangle, Nicky Palermo, Vincey Palermo, Amir Pio, Ibo Pio, Muhammad Pio, Zac Politarhos, Nolan Rau, AJ Santisi, Mike Scott, and Jack Thomas.
This tournament honors the memory of the former Downingtown High student-athlete, a budding lax player who passed away as a result of a car accident in 2003.
