Seven-time defending A-10 champion, Massachusetts, has again been picked atop the 2016 Women’s Lacrosse Preseason Poll, the league announced Thursday.
UMass received all 10 first place votes to claim the top spot with 100 points. Richmond received 88 points, finishing in second, while Duquesne earned 72 points to take third in the poll.
George Mason followed closely behind with 70 points and the fourth spot, while La Salle (58 points),George Washington (54) and Davidson (38) finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
Saint Joseph’s (36), St. Bonaventure (23), and VCU (11), who will compete in its first season as a Division I team, rounded out the poll.
UMass is coming off a 19-2 campaign in 2015 which saw the Minutewomen reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament after winning its seventh straight A-10 Championship. Leading scorer and A-10 Player of the Year, Erika Eipp, returns after notching 75 points last season as does the reigning A-10 Midfielder of the Year, Hannah Murphy, who set a new school record with 113 draw controls along side 57 points on the offensive side. Defensively, UMass returns three of its starting four on the back led by twins Anne and Kate Farnham, but will be replacing the graduated A-10 Defensive Player of the Year in goalie Rachel Vallarelli.
Richmond (10-9, 6-2 A-10), last year’s runner up, completed back-to-back seasons with 10 or more wins for the first time since 2007-2008. The Spiders, who have competed in five of the last six A-10 championship finales, return 17 upperclassmen, including 2015 Rookie of the Year, Kim Egizi.
The 2016 Atlantic 10 Women’s Lacrosse Championship will be held May 5-8 at Duquesne’s Rooney Field. The Championship will feature an extended bracket of six teams.
