From Press Release
The Lafayette men’s lacrosse team will participate in the Nicholas Colleluori Long Island Classic as part of their fall schedule on Saturday at Hofstra. The event supports the HEADstrong Foundation, whose aim is to improve the lives of those affected by cancer.
Colleluori was a lacrosse player entering his sophomore year at Hofstra when he was terminally diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was the founder of HEADstrong and lost his courageous and untimely battle in 2006 at the age of 21. Over the past nine years, college lacrosse teams have participated each fall in his honor.
“We’re proud to join forces with the Colleluori family to do our part and help raise awareness for the cause,” head coach Jim Rogalski said. “While our games this weekend remain part of our focus, we realize that this event is about more than just lacrosse. Nick’s vision is being fulfilled through the relentless efforts of his family, athletes and supporters across the country and we’re proud to be a little part of that.”
The HEADstrong foundation is committed to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through providing essential programs and services. Members of HEADstrong will honor heroes and their families at the event, presenting grants and gifts. Additionally, President Cheryl Colleluori, mother of Nick, will also present the prestigious Nicholas Colleluori Award to a member of each program whose contributions on and off the field are transforming the landscape of their represented program.
On the field this year, the Leopards are joined by Hobart College, Hofstra, Mount St. Mary’s and Yale. Lafayette will take on Mount St. Mary’s at 9 a.m. and Hobart at 1:40 p.m.
In addition to a $5.00 suggested donation per person at the gate, Lafayette has also set a goal to raise $3,000 for the cause prior to the event. For more information on the Lafayette initiative and to donate, visit here.
