Smokey Joe’s Quakers – a team comprised mostly of Penn grads – won the Super Grand Master Division Friday by defeating Patriot LC 11-7 and going 4-0 in one of the most elite 16-team fields in the country for this age bracket.
The Quakers defeated Duke LC 7-2 in round one, Faber LC 12-2 in the quarters, and Koopers LC 7-2 in the semis. This is the third Placid Championship for the Quakers in four years.
The Quakers were coached by Mike Murphy, the Head Coach at Penn; Mike Persky was Offensive MVP for the Quakers and the defense was star studded with Gerry Byrne, Zach Colburn and Timmy Schurr along with excellent goaltending from Chuck Leitner and Brian Mann. Radnor residents Gary Martin and Tommy Hannum (Head coach or Marple Newtown) were key contributors on the team and have been on the squad the last four years.
